Swift Current hosting 2015 Southern Women’s Curling Playdowns

Another high profile curling event will be taking place on Southwest ice, with Swift Current announced as the host club for the 2015 Viterra Southern Women’s Curling Playdowns. Swift Current will host 12 of the best women’s curling teams from across Southern Sask. during the Jan. 8 to Jan. 11 playdowns at the Swift Current Curling Club. Southern Saskatchewan will be the place to be to watch the best women’s curling play during 2015, as the top four teams from the Southern Women’s Playdowns in Swift Current will advance to the 2015 Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts Provincial Women’s Championship in Assiniboia on Jan. 21 to 25. Saskatchewan’s top team will advance to represent the province at the 2015 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw. Swift Current Curling Club President Karen Biese said this event is another opportunity for the club to show their ability to host a calibre curling event.

“Swift Current has always been really well known for hosting very good events. We’ve hosted the Pepsi Juniors, the Canadian Mixed, and of course the World Women’s, so we’ve certainly got lots of experience at the local, the provincial, national and international level,” Biese said. She is expecting the Southern event will be a success both on and off the ice.

“We’ve got some great curlers in Swift Current and in the South. The possibility is definitely there that the provincial champion would be coming out of this Southern Playdown and then end up playing in Moose Jaw at the Scotties.”

The Curling Club also boasts a series of dedicated volunteers to put on this type of event.

“It seems like anytime that we do have a big event people come out even if they maybe don’t necessarily curl any more, but they still don’t mind coming out and working at the door or whatever. They just like to be involved.”

A series of sponsorship opportunities will be announced in the coming weeks, and again Biese highlights the business community has always been a strong supporter of curling in Swift Current.

“The business community has always been really good to the Curling Club. There’s usually quite a good crowd at the women’s curling events especially.”

“We have a great facility. We have an excellent ice maker, and we really have ice that’s akin to any arena. It’s nice and keen.”
