Lyric Theatre getting ready for annual Chautauqua

- SUBMITTED to Die, A Love Story, 7 Ways

Summer is filled with epic weekends in Swift Current. Within the span of a month, we have the Windscape and Long Days’s Night festivals, our Centennial Homecoming Frontier Days, and of course the seventh season of the Lyric Theatre’s Summer Chautauqua The- atre Festival. The Chautauqua Theatre Festival is our contribution to Saskatchewan’s season of festivals, as we try to pack exciting events into every weekend of the summer. Chautauqua is a multi-disciplinary performing arts festival that brings contemporary professional theatre to Swift Current. Each year, our line up of plays reflects the diversity of live theatre, and we try to ensure that there will be something that appeals to everyone.

Kicking off the festival this year we have the critically acclaimed comedy God is a Scottish Drag Queen, in which a middle-aged Scottish matron tells humanity exactly how we’re doing so far! This opening show is followed by the visually stunning

which is done entirely in full face mask. 7 Ways to Die is a charming story that uses unconventional storytelling techniques to explore relationships and isolation in the modern world. Our feature children’s show this year will be Opera Mouse, a hit at the major Fringe Festivals last season. Performed by professional opera singer Melanie Gall, and her puppet mouse Tillie, Opera Mouse is a classic underdog story of a mouse who wants to sing, not just squeak. $5 per child for this lovely piece of children’s theatre.

The weekend of the festival will feature Underbelly, a critically acclaimed one-man show based on the life and work of the author William S. Burroughs and other members of the Beat Generation.

Rounding out the festival, we also have some fantastic comedies. Gary Has a Date is a hilarious performance about a hopeless nerd getting ready for a date, in the pratfall-prone style of Mr. Bean or Don Knotts.

Finally, rounding out the festival is the rock and roll smash hit Super Musician. Performed by Die Roten Punkte, super stars on the Fringe Festival circuit, Super Musician tells the story of two wannabe rock stars/ bickering German siblings.

Complete with an awardwinning soundtrack and a unique brand of humour, Super Musician is guaranteed to be a smash hit. Call Rachel at 306-774-0081 or email rachel.lyrictheatre@gmail.co m for more information.
