Tribe drop season opener

-

Mother Nature wreaked havoc on the opening days of the Swift Current Indians’ Western Major Baseball League schedule, raining out their season opener on Thursday and then Sunday’s game in Regina as well.

The Tribe lost their WMBL season opener 9-2 to the visiting Weyburn Beavers Saturday.

The Indians led most of the way before the Beavers scored nine unanswered runs late in the game.

Second baseman Matt Spillman finished two-for-four with a walk, a stolen base, and two runs batted in for the Tribe. Right fielder Justin Lee had three hits in his debut for the Indians as well.

Justin Woods and Kevin Bettencourt came around to score on a Spillman single in the bottom of the second inning for a 2-0 lead.

Veteran lefty Sean Callegari made a strong start for the Indians, allowing only three hits and two walks over seven scoreless innings while striking out eight.

The Indians bullpen was unable to lock down the win, allowing all nine runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Indians’ fans will have a good opportunity to look at the 2014 team with four home games over the next six days.

The Tribe will host the Lethbridge Bulls on Thursday before visiting the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets on Friday. The Indians will then host the Edmonton Prospects on Saturday evening and Sunday at 2:05 p.m. and also the Okotoks Dawgs on Tuesday.
