Host team tops District track and field meet
The Swift Current Comp. was the site of the SWAC District Track and Field Championships May 28 as the top athletes from schools across the Southwest took part.
The host Ardens, the only 4A school taking part, easily won the female team competition with 373.5 points. Gull Lake, a 1A school, placed second in the female standings with 156.5 points and Shaunavon, a 2A school, was third with 112 points.
They were followed in the standings by Maple Creek, Eastend, Leader, Cabri, OM Irwin, Frontier, Herbert, and Ponteix.
The host Colts also ran away with the boys team title with 322 points, followed by Shaunavon in second with 232 points, and Gull Lake with 170 points. They were followed by Maple Creek, OM Irwin, Ponteix, Eastend, Hazlet, Fox Valley, Frontier, and Vanguard.
Shaunavon’s Kortlyn Fuller had one of the highest aggregate points totals in the meet with 36 points to win the Bantam Girls Division title. Swift Current OM Irwin’s Logan Fritzke equaled her total to win the Bantam Boys championship.
Swift Current’s Mackenzie Froehlich and Cabri’s Kyra Braaten tied atop the Midget Girls aggregate standings with 34 points each. Shaunavon’s Jordan Voll won the Midget Boys aggregate title with a meet leading 38 points.
Shaunavon’s Rachel Davis and Eastend’s Lane Richardson topped the Junior Girls and Boys aggregate standings respectively with 34 points apiece.
Leader’s Jayla Walker topped the Senior Girls Division with 28 points and Swift Current’s Marcus Kouri led the Senior Boys aggregate points race with 30 points.
A total of 18 new individual meet records were set as well, primarily in the Midget and Bantam age groups.
Gull Lake’s Callen Boutin established a pair of new Midget Boys records. He was one of three athletes to better the 200 Metre Dash record of 24.80 seconds when he finished in 24.03 seconds. He also shaved over two seconds off the 400 Metre record when he finished in 55.83 seconds.
Shaunavon’s Tye Tremere set a new standard in Bantam Boys 80 Metre Hurdles when he finished in 13.24 seconds to eclipse the old record of 13.97 seconds.
Shaunavon’s Kortlyn Fuller slashed nearly two sec- onds off the Bantam Girls 80 Metre Hurdles record when she finished the race in 14.10 seconds. She also had a record-tying performance in High Jump when she and Maple Creek’s Alex Mason both cleared 1.35 metres to equal the previous record. Fuller also added 38 centimetres to the Long Jump record with a 4.41 metre leap.
Mason also set a Bantam Girls Triple Jump record at 8.83 metres to add 18 centimetres to the old mark.
Irwin’s Branden Lemay added two centimetres to the Bantam Boys Long Jump record when he travelled 5.21 metres.
Tobi Ojo set three new Bantam Boys records at the meet. He took 1.09 seconds off the 100 Metre Dash standard when he finished in 12.0 seconds. He also shaved over two seconds off the 200 Metre Dash record when he finished in 25.59 seconds. Ojo finished the 400 Metre Run in 1:01.25 to take another two seconds of the old record.
Shaunavon’s Tenelle Lind added a pair of Bantam Girls records. She ran the 800 Metres in 2:38.97 to easily top the old standard of 2:47.81. She also established a new record in the 1500 Metre Run in 5:53, nearly seven seconds better than the old mark.
Logan Fritzke added two Bantam Boys records. He added 70 centimetres to the Triple Jump record with an 11.11-metre effort. Fritzke also set a new standard of 35.59 metres in Discus as well.
Irwin’s Kalea Sauder set new records in the Bantam Girls 100 Metre Dash in 13.56 seconds and in the 200 Metre Dash in 27.94 seconds.
Four new records were also set in the 4x100 relays on Wednesday. The Rolling Hills ‘A’ team finished in 54.31 seconds to top the Midget Girls record of 55.30. The Rolling Hills ‘A’ team added a Senior Boys record in 46.58 to top the previous time of 46.60 seconds. The Rolling Hills ‘A’ team also set a new mark on Bantam Boys in 52.18 seconds to erase the previous mark of 52.18 seconds. The final mark was set by the Rolling Hills Bantam Girls ‘A’ team in 56.65 seconds to shatter the existing record of 1:02.31.
The top two male and female athletes in each Midget, Junior, and Senior event will now advance to the SHSAA Provincial Championships in Moose Jaw on Friday and Saturday.
