High school athletes dominate in Herbert

The Saskatchew­an High School Rodeo Associatio­n was in Herbert for three days of high school rodeo last month and Southwest high school students were all over the leaderboar­d in their hometown rodeo.

Mankota’s Kassidy Williamson had an outstandin­g weekend with seven top-10 finishes and three event wins in Herbert. She opened the rodeo with a win in Poles in 21.245 seconds and a third-place finish in Barrels in 15.035 seconds. On day two Williamson was fifth in Barrels in 14.832 seconds and ninth in Goat Tying in 16.2 seconds. She won Barrels in 14.208 seconds and Poles in 20.897 seconds on day three, was fourth in Goat Tying in 11.5 seconds, and then combined with Calonna Slade to place fourth in Team Roping in 19.8 seconds.

Cabri’s Demi Phillips came up with seven top-10 finishes in Herbert. Her top performanc­e came in Goat Tying on day two when she placed second in 9.8 seconds. She was also third on day two in Poles in 22.321 seconds and fourth in Barrels in 14.812 seconds. Demi Philips was sixth in Goat Tying on day three in 13.1 seconds and ninth in Barrels in 14.987 seconds. She got her weekend started on day one with a ninth-place finish in Barrels in 15.161 seconds and a 10thplace showing in Goat Tying in 15.3 seconds.

Cabri’s Bari Phillips posted similar results in Herbert with six top-10 placings. One of her best results came on day two when she placed second in Poles in 21.854 seconds and added a sixth-place showing in Goat Tying in 12.2 seconds that day. She improved on day three to place second in Goat Tying in 10.0 seconds and also was seventh in Breakaway Roping in 11.9 seconds. Bari Phillips had begun the Herbert rodeo with a third-place showing in Goat Tying in 11.6 seconds and was 10th in Barrels in 15.168 seconds.

Neidpath’s Madison Kovar did her best work in Herbert in Breakaway Roping. She was fourth on day one in 5.5 seconds, second on day two in 4.5 seconds, and tied for first in 3.5 seconds on day three. Kovar also placed seventh in Goat Tying in 13.9 seconds on day two.

Hazlet’s Jordyn Becker had three top-10 finishes in Herbert, led by a fifth-place showing in Poles in 22.542 seconds on day three. She also placed sixth in Barrels on day three in 14.898 seconds and was eighth in Barrels on day two in 15.076 seconds.

Swift Current’s Talysha Gering produced a pair of top-10 finishes in Herbert. Her best showing came on day three when she was seventh in Poles in 22.87 seconds. Gering also placed ninth in Poles on day one in 23.235 seconds.

Waldeck’s Tyce McLeod was one of the standouts of the rodeo just down Highway #1 from his hometown. He registered eight top-10 finishes, including three event wins on day one alone. Tyce McLeod opened his rodeo with an impressive win in Steer Wrestling in 4.1 seconds, a win in Tie Down Roping in 10.5 seconds and then teamed up with his brother, Tee, to win Team Roping in 15.1 seconds on day one. Tyce McLeod finished second in Tie Down Roping on day two in 12.0 seconds, was third in Steer Wrestling in 19.2 seconds, and then placed sixth in Team Roping in 24.1 seconds. McLeod concluded a strong weekend with another win in Tie Down in 12.1 seconds and a runner-up finish in Steer Wrestling in 14.1 seconds.

Val Marie’s Riley Hayes found himself on the leader- board throughout the weekend with seven top-10 finishes. He was second in Tie Down Roping on day one in 11.2 seconds, third in Steer Wrestling in 13.8 seconds and worked with Greg Gillis (Swift Current) to place third in Team Roping in 32.5 seconds. Hayes was second in Goat Tying in 10.2 seconds, fourth in Tie Down in 13.8 seconds and fifth in Team Roping in 21.5 seconds. He concluded his weekend with a third-place finish in Steer Wrestling in 17.4 seconds on day three. Waldeck’s Tee McLeod had three-top 10 placings. He won Team Roping in 15.1 seconds on day one, was sixth in Team Roping in 24.1 seconds on day two, and placed third in Tie Down Roping on day two in 12.0 seconds.

Swift Current’s Greg Gillis also had success close to home. He was third in Team Roping on Day one in 32.5 seconds with Hayes and fifth on day two in 21.5 seconds. He won Tie Down Roping on day two in 11.1 seconds as well. Hazenmore’s Chanse Switzer finished sixth in Tie Down Roping on day one in Herbert in 28.1 seconds and then finished sixth again in Tie Down on day three in 21.4 seconds. Val Marie’s Dylan Larson hit the leaderboar­d on day three with a seventhpla­ce showing in Tie Down in 21.9 seconds.

Swift Current’s Shay Lamb only had one top-10 result but it was an event win in Team Roping in 8.7 seconds on day three with Dawson Lehmann (Mayfair). Cadillac’s Kelton Lang also had a top-10 result when he finished sixth in Team Roping on day three in 20.2 seconds.
