CCA rodeo returns to the Southwest

The Canadian Cowboys’ Associatio­n rodeo circuit hit the Southwest for the first time in 2014 with the Dean Anthony Memorial Rodeo in Mankota.

The field was packed with Southwest competitor­s and many were able to finish in the money. The top overall result came from Maple Creek’s Brady Bertram who rode City Wide for 74 points to top Bareback and claim $612. Consul’s Monty Koopman was right behind him in second spot with 71 points on Carbon Copy for $522. Tompkins’ Jason Hofer placed fourth with 68 points on Powder Paint for $342 as well.

Maple Creek’s Brady Resch also won Junior Steer Riding with a 75point ride for $302. Hazenmore’s Chanse Switzer scored 71 points to place second for $250 and Val Marie’s Colt Kornfeld tied for fourth with 69 points for $48.

Kassidy Williamson also had success in her hometown when the Mankota cowgirl won the first Junior Girls Barrel Racing go round in 16.77 seconds for $162. Maple Creek’s Hallie Anderson was third in the first go round in 17.04 seconds for $81.

Maple Creek’s Ross Kreutzer placed second in Saddle Bronc in Mankota with 70 points aboard Friction to claim $648. Maple Creek’s Mike Gordon scored 69 points on Aimes No Change to tie for third in Saddle Bronc for $445. Wood Mountain’s Rhett Fitzpatric­k won the event with 75 points on Taken Chances.

Tie Down Roping was also a successful event for Southwest cowboys. Waldeck’s Tyce McLeod placed second in Tie Down Average. He won the second go round in 10.8 seconds and placed second in average in 22.6 seconds. Swift Current’s Blaine Switzer finished third in average after placing third in the first go round in 10.1 seconds and then third in the second go round in 14.4 seconds. Waldeck’s Tuftin McLeod was sixth in the first go round in 10.8 seconds. Cremona’s Aaron Miller placed second both times to win the event in 20.7 seconds total.

Maple Creek’s Colby Gilbert placed second out of 54 competitor­s in Ladies Barrel Racing in Mankota. She was sixth in Go Round One in 16.68 seconds and then won the second go round in 16.22 seconds. Maple Creek’s Kristy Gilchrist placed third in the first go round in 16.66 seconds as well.

A pair of Southwest duos finished top-three in Team Roping in Mankota. The Val Marie tandem of Ryan Hayes and Riley Hayes placed second in average in 14.8 seconds. They were third in the first go round in 7.4 seconds and fourth in the second go round in 7.4 seconds again.

Val Marie’s Wyatt Hayes and Mankota’s Shawn Williamson were fourth in the first go round in 7.5 seconds as well. Blaine and Matt Switzer were unable to crack the top-four on either day but their total of 15.7 seconds left them third in average.

The CCA calendar continues this weekend with the Warman Diamond Rodeo, the Eston Rodeo, and the Sandhill Rodeo in Lancer.
