Championship weekend for United teams

It was a championship weekend for Swift Current United Soccer Club teams over the weekend when three teams played in the gold medal matches at the Harder Avalon Classic in Saskatoon.

The Under-18 United Boys cruised into the final, out-scoring their opponents 10-2 in the fourteam round robin.

They defeated Saskatoon Lakewood 3-1, the Humboldt Hurricanes 3-1 and the Flin Flon Fusion 4-0 to qualify for Sunday’s final.

They rematched with Lakewood in the final and won gold with a 2- 1 victory.

The Under-14 United Girls won their robin group with a 2-0-1 record at the eight- team event. They opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Saskatoon’s Aurora Horizon. They tied Saskatoon Hollandia Senior 1- 1 on Saturday morning and then clinched top spot in the round robin with a 40 win over the Humboldt Hurricanes.

The U14 Girls had no problem advancing past Weyburn with a 4-0 win in the semi- final before losing 1- 0 in a shootout in the final against Hollandia Senior.

The Swift Current United Under-16 Girls team was forced to play up in the U18 Division after there wasn’t enough U16 teams.

They opened the tournament with a 2-0 upset win over Saskatoon’s Aurora Mirage on Friday evening. Ashley Eben scored the game winner with seven minutes left on the clock and Mackenzie Froehlich added an insurance marker five minutes later. Hannah Dyck earned the shutout in goal and fullback Sydney Hope was named Player of the Game.

Swift Current improved to 2- 0 with a 1- 0 win over the Flin Flon Fury. Froehlich scored late in regulation to clinch another win as Dyck added a second shutout in goal.

Brittney Lamontagne was named the Player of the Game.

The U16 United Girls found their offensive touch in a 4- 0 win over VUSC on Saturday afternoon.

Brooke Vallee scored twice, while Kirah Brown and Haley Bissonnette also tallied.

Swift Current faced Saskatoon’s Aurora Majestic on Sunday morning in the semi-final and won 30 to advance. Dyck earned a fourth consecutive shutout and was named Player of the Game, Froehlich scored twice, and Vallee also scored.

The U16 Girls met up with a strong Yorkton U18 team in the championship final and upended their rival United opponent 3-0. Froehlich scored twice and was named Player of the Game and Vallee added a single in the championship win as the U16 girls outscored their older opponents 13- 0 in five straight wins.
