Bailey qualifies for Junior Nationals

Shaunavon’s Corey Bailey qualified for Nationals with a sixthplace finish at the CN Future Links Prairie Championsh­ip at Shilo Country Club in Westman, Manitoba.

The 54- hole stroke play championsh­ip featured Canada’s top junior golfers which are aged 11-18.

Bailey, 16, defeated Quebec City’s CharlesEri­c Belanger on the second playoff hole to claim the sixth and final quota playoff spot at Nationals.

Bailey sat fourth after day one after an evenpar 72 to open the threeround tournament.

He sat just two shots back of leaders Zach Sackett of Winnipeg and Victoria’s Keaton Gudz.

Bailey was one-under on the front nine after birdies on the third and ninth holes.

He finished one- over on the back nine with a birdie on the 17th hole and bogeys on 10 and 18.

Bailey fired a one- over 73 on day two Saturday to sit five shots back of the leader, Calgary’s Andrew Brown, who shot a three- under par 69 on Saturday for a three-shot lead heading into the final day.

Bailey was one- over on the front nine and then even on the back nine when he birdied 17 before a bogey on 18 for a second consecutiv­e round.

Sunday, Bailey shot a six-over 78 to finish sixover for the weekend, tied for sixth place.

Brown closed out the win with a 75 on Sunday to earn a five- shot win over West Vancouver’s Owen Xiong and Sackett.

The top six competitor­s in the Junior Boys division of each CN Future Links Championsh­ip earned exemptions into the 2014 Canadian Junior Boys Championsh­ip, which will be contested July 28 – August 1 at the Legends on the Niagara Battlefiel­d course in Niagara Falls, Ont.
