Lifestyle opportunities highlighted during Recreation and Parks Week in Swift Current
Swift Current has numerous ways to celebrate Recreation and Parks Month in Canada not only this month but year round.
A delegation from the City of Swift Current’s Community Services department attended the June 9 Swift Current City Council meeting to help proclaim June 8 to 14 as Recreation and Parks Week in Swift Current.
“Here in Swift Current, we are home to some of the greatest park spaces and low cost recreation programs within the province. There are amazing opportunities for fun, social, physical, economic, and environmental benefits right here in our own backyard,” said Teresa Dunlop, Superintendent of Recreation and Scheduling. Recreation and Parks play an important role in creating strong, healthy and active communities.
There are a series of programming opportunities over the summer for city residents of all ages, ranging from the free drop-in Groove In The Park program for women running Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings, to the On The Move programs for youth age 10-15. The Families In The Park program runs mornings during July and August, with the popular Parks Play Program running all day every weekend of the summer. There are also programs delivered through The Hub Youth Centre, and there are also Art and Music Camps running during the summer. A new fitness opportunity is now open at Elmwood Park alongside the Chinook Pathway, as a recently opened outdoor fitness park is now operating. This park boasts 13 weight resistant pieces of all-weather fitness stations for cardio and strength training. There are opportunities to get active by utilizing the Chinook Parkway system which boasts 20 kilometres of walkways, or in any of Swift Current’s over 25 park spaces which are popular for everything from frisbee to picnics.
Water is a big part of summer in the city, with a busy outdoor pool and eight spray parks. The Fairview Pool opened June 17, and a busy summer of swimming lessons and public swim times are planned. A total of seven Swift Current spray parks began summer operations this past Friday, while the spray park at ACT Park is schedule to be open for use this Saturday. The ACT Spray Park opening was delayed so construction work and installation of the accessible play structure could be safely completed.
All eight spray parks will be operating from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and are scheduled to remain open until the September long weekend. Swift Current also boasts the Elmwood and Chinook Golf Courses, a number of athletic fields, tennis courts and a variety of playground structures.
