The Swift Current Peewee Indians were one of two host teams to win their home baseball tournament over the weekend. They clinched the home title with a 4-1 win over the Saskatoon AAA Bluejays on Sunday afternoon.

“It went really well,” said coach Ken Wall. “Our starter, Tyson Buist, gave us a really good outing on the hill. From there our defense was really solid behind him and we got some timely hits to end up with a 4-1 win.”

The Indians had a 2-1 record to win their round robin group. They opened their tournament with an 11-1 win over the Saskatoon AAA Cardinals Friday. They faltered Saturday morning in an 8-6 loss to Unity.

“We seem liked we have one really good game and then we kind of have a letup in the next one and that happened here too,” admitted Wall. “Probably the biggest reason was we weren’t throwing strikes as much as we should have and then our bats just kind of backed off as well. We did make a comeback at the end and got some hits but it was too little too late.”

The Tribe rebounded with a 13-1 over Saskatoon’s AA Bluejay Bashers later that day.

“The kids seemed to really bounce back well. We had a talk with them and they came out the next game and played really well and that set us up to be second in our pool to get into the playoffs.”

They hammered Weyburn in the semi-final and Wall said it was a huge win in the final.

“Yeah we are happy. The Bluejays would be ranked as one of the top teams in the province and to knock them off in the final was a huge win for us and a huge confidence booster.”

“A lot of things had to go right. We had some outstanding plays in the field and Tyson made some huge pitches when he had to and we got some key hits. The kids are real happy with how they played.”

The Peewee Indians are currently second in the Baseball Regina AAA League with an 8-7 record.

“We are definitely holding our own,” said Wall.

“I keep waiting for the kids to string a few wins together and I guess we will go forward from this win and build on this and see if we can’t make some noise in the league.”

The Peewee Indians will be off this weekend before attending an AAA tournament in Saskatoon the following weekend where they expect to see the top teams in the province.

“That will be a real measuring stick in terms of where we fit I think,” said Wall.
