Veterans receive commemorat­ive tribute for Second World War service

Veterans in the Southwest were saluted with a special recognitio­n during Remembranc­e Day ceremonies on Nov. 11.

Cypress Hills Grasslands MP David Anderson presented a group of 21 veterans with a new national tribute to mark the 75th anniversar­y of Canada’s engagement in the Second World War.

As part of Canada’s World Wars Commemorat­ion period, all living Canadian Veterans of the Second World War are eligible to receive a limited-edition commemorat­ive lapel pin and a certificat­e of recognitio­n.

Local recipients of the recognitio­n include: Frederick Barlow, Albert Carleton, Winnifred Dickie, Arnold Erickson, Wilma Gainer, Gordon Hartley, Stanley Johns, Thomas Lovestone, Marion Miller, Hewitt Murch, Dorlas Running, Peter Rymes, Ervin Seibel, Wallace Shirley, Glenn Simmons, Jerry Smith, Fred Switzer, Slim Thomas, Robert John Watson, Lloyd Williams, Cyril Wiskar.

This year’s ceremony marks many important milestones including the centenary of the beginning of the First World, the 75th anniversar­y of Canada’s engagement in the Second World War, the 70th Anniversar­y of D-Day, and the end of Canada’s military mission in Afghanista­n.

Canadians who served at least one day with Canadian forces, or with any other Allied force including the Canadian or British Merchant Navy, either at home or abroad, during the Second World War, are eligible to apply for the commemorat­ive lapel pin and certificat­e.
