Veterans receive commemorative tribute for Second World War service
Veterans in the Southwest were saluted with a special recognition during Remembrance Day ceremonies on Nov. 11.
Cypress Hills Grasslands MP David Anderson presented a group of 21 veterans with a new national tribute to mark the 75th anniversary of Canada’s engagement in the Second World War.
As part of Canada’s World Wars Commemoration period, all living Canadian Veterans of the Second World War are eligible to receive a limited-edition commemorative lapel pin and a certificate of recognition.
Local recipients of the recognition include: Frederick Barlow, Albert Carleton, Winnifred Dickie, Arnold Erickson, Wilma Gainer, Gordon Hartley, Stanley Johns, Thomas Lovestone, Marion Miller, Hewitt Murch, Dorlas Running, Peter Rymes, Ervin Seibel, Wallace Shirley, Glenn Simmons, Jerry Smith, Fred Switzer, Slim Thomas, Robert John Watson, Lloyd Williams, Cyril Wiskar.
This year’s ceremony marks many important milestones including the centenary of the beginning of the First World, the 75th anniversary of Canada’s engagement in the Second World War, the 70th Anniversary of D-Day, and the end of Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan.
Canadians who served at least one day with Canadian forces, or with any other Allied force including the Canadian or British Merchant Navy, either at home or abroad, during the Second World War, are eligible to apply for the commemorative lapel pin and certificate.
