Oratorio Choir sharing seasonal music during Voices of Christmas
The Swift Current Oratorio Choir celebrates the beginning of the Christmas season by presenting “Voices of Christmas”, with special guest Prairie Spirit.
With snow on the ground and falling temperatures, the season for Christmas music is beginning. However, “Voices of Christmas” is more than just Christmas. The choir will present a wide range of music, from light-hearted folk songs and contemporary arrangements to more traditional favourites like “Go Tell It On The Mountain”. Prairie Spirit will debut “A Christmas Carol”, based on a poem by G.K. Chesterton and newly arranged for Prairie Spirit by Margaret King.
The Swift Current Oratorio Choir is continuing to build on more than 40 years of choral music in the Swift Current area. The choir’s talent and dedication to excellence led to a trip to New York this past January to perform at Carnegie Hall.
The Swift Current Oratorio Choir is a community choir based in Swift Current. Prairie Spirit is a relatively new, auditioned choral group in Swift Current. Both choirs are directed by Marcia McLean. Amy Kehler is the new accompanist for the Oratorio Choir, while Prairie Spirit continues to be accompanied by Sheila Braun.
This year, the Oratorio Choir has over 90 members, including many recent additions as well as singers who have been with the choir for many years. While many choir members are from Swift Current, more than one third of the choir comes from surrounding communities such as Pambrun, Herbert, Pennant, Tompkins, Frontier and Aneroid.
With so much support for the Oratorio Choir from all over the Southwest, the choir has decided to perform two concerts, with a performance in Shaunavon in addition to their annual concert in Swift Current.
“Voices of Christmas” will be performed at Centre Street United Church in Shaunavon on Sat., Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m., and on Mon., Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Zion Mennonite Church in Swift Current. Tickets for each concert will be $15 in advance, or $20 at the door. Advance tickets for the Dec. 6 performance are available at Andersboda in Shaunavon, or at Pharmasave in Swift Current for the concert on Dec. 8.
