They just kind of pushed ahead and won the next two,” he said of the championship match.
Peters said they had lost a couple of key players after last season.
“But the bulk of our team was there from last year. You felt like we were going to take bit of step back just losing a couple key guys. But because we had such a veteran team, a lot of guys came back, we kind of just picked up from where we left off last year.”
Edge 6’4’’ left side Matt Beutler won the Men’s Provincial Most Valuable Player Award after winning the MVP award for the regular season as well.
Peters said the Foremost product’s improvement has been impressive during his time at Millar College.
“He came here as a basketball player and we have semesterized sports so I got him to play volleyball. Really by his third year he was coming into his own,” said Peters.
“When he is on his game he is hard to beat from the power position. He played exceptional from that left side position. I am very happy with how he has grown into a volleyball player.”
The Edge will now be off to Moose Jaw this weekend for Westerns, which will include nine teams, four from Manitoba, four from Saskatchewan, and one from Alberta.
“As a program, traditionally we have set our goals as being final four,” said Peters.
The Edge have made seven previous appearances at Westerns and have played in the semi- final on four occasions but have never been able to advance to the championship match.
“Ultimately I would love to see us in that final game this year. If somehow we could get there I think we would be really happy with that tournament,” he said.
Peters said there are always a couple of really good teams out of Manitoba and that the Saskatchewan teams from Kelsey and Great Plains were right there with them all season as well. “They are barking at our heels and it has been close,” he said.
