The Southwest Booster

Anonymous elves spreading Christmas magic

- The Booster was recently approached about a group of people who have had a near two decade long tradition of anonymously sharing goodwill during the Christmas season. This is a submitted account of this special tradition.

It is Christmas time again and we have again seen some Christmas magic around Swift Current in the form of elves.

Beginning December 15 and running until December 23, for the last 20 odd years there has been reported "elf " sightings. A knock on the door or the doorbell rings, and there is no one at the door. But, on closer look, you might find a gift, some treats, a food hamper, or even a letter from Santa. Some have even reported that their sidewalks have been mysteriously cleaned.

You might see something sparkle in the snow.

There have been opinions offered that the sparkle is Christmas magic that the elves leave when going about doing random acts of kindness.

There have been reports of sightings of someone (an elf maybe) rapidly disappearing around a corner. Or when you answer your door you may be lucky enough to have an elf give you a friendly wave and a cheery Merry Christmas.

It seems that this Christmas tradition has taken root in Swift Current and the elves are active again this year. It is even rumoured that some of the elves chose not to exchange gifts this year. They chose to put the money they would have used for gifts in support of the Southwest Youth Emergency Shelter.

As this grateful recipient of "elfin" says, thank you for renewing hope, kindness and the magic of Christmas.
