Broncos looking for a better second half

The Swift Current Broncos entered the holiday break on a winning note with a 5-2 win over the visiting Saskatoon Blades.

The Broncos led 1- 0 after one period and broke the game open with the first three goals in the second period, including two powerplay goals from Colby Cave, to lead 4-0.

Nikita Soshnin scored for a 5- 1 Swift Current lead after two periods. Coda Gordon restored the Broncos four- goal lead early in the third period and Brett Stovin closed the scoring for the Blades with an outstanding solo effort.

Landon Bow made 24 saves on 26 shots to improve to 16-11-1-3. Nik Amundrud took the loss with 34 saves on 39 shots.

Carter Rigby and Zac Mackay also scored for the Broncos and Glenn Gawdin finished with three assists.

The game featured only four minor penalties and the Broncos capitalized on both of their powerplays and held the Blades without a goal while shorthanded, including a 1:16 two-man-advantage.

“It is always nice to win and it’s how you win,” said Broncos’ Head Coach and General Manager Mark Lamb. “It was a great game for our whole team. We got to roll four lines, everyone got to play and be a part of it. A couple of big plays by Caver killing that penalty, helped out by a couple of D. Those are turning points when you can kill five-on-threes. I think it was just a real solid effort for 60 minutes.”

It was a rare game that the Broncos were able to break open.

“No and you are not going to. It is going to be hard stretch and it has been a hard stretch. It has been a stressful first half, that’s just the way it is going to be right down to the end,” said Lamb.
