Royal visit and Centennial celebratio­ns highlight 2014 in Swift Current

What a year 2014 was in the Southwest! The City of Swift Current hosted a trio of celebratio­n events during their Centennial celebratio­ns in 2014, with the three community gatherings certainly ranking among the highlights of the past year.

The past year also featured a Royal Visit with Prince Edward the Earl of Wessex touring through Swift Current on Sept. 19.

Also making front page news this past year was a remarkable effort by Swift Current’s Meghan Chisholm who completed a gruelling swim of the English Channel on July 22. She has the distinctio­n of being the only Saskatchew­an resident to swim the English Channel.

A pair of Swift Current rinks emerged from a starstudde­d field to face one another in the championsh­ip game at the 20142015 Tim Hortons Provincial Mixed Curling Championsh­ip in Rosetown Sunday.

The South West rinks skipped by Shaun Meachem and Max Kirkpatric­k came out of the 16team field to face one another with a trip to Nationals on the line, with Kirkpatric­k's foursome earning an 8-7 victory.

Cyclones win league title in overtime

The South West Cyclones won two straight South Sask Female Bantam A Hockey League playoff games in overtime to claim the league title after a grueling best-of-three championsh­ip series against the rival Estevan Chargers. Tigers eliminate Broncos in first round of playoffs

The Swift Current Broncos’ season came to an end in the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs for a second straight season. The Broncos were eliminated in game six of their best-ofseven opening round playoff series against the Medicine Hat Tigers.
