Shaunavon rink misses playoffs at provincial­s

It was a tough week at the 2015 Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts Women’s Provincial Championsh­ip for Wendy Thienes as her Shaunavon rink lost all five games in Assiniboia.

Thienes was joined by third Shelly Rhodes, second Della Moffat, and lead Sandra McKellar. They dropped their opening match at the Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts Wednesday. The Shaunavon rink lost 11-4 to Balgonie’s Mandy Selzer in eight ends after falling behind 6-0 after two ends.

The Shaunavon rink dropped their next game 12-4 to Saskatoon’s Trish Paulsen in nine ends Thursday. Paulsen jumped ahead 8-3 with three points in the seventh end and then scored four in the ninth end to finish things.

Thienes dropped her evening game 8-4 to Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton. Thienes scored a single in the opening end with the hammer but Lawton scored points in four straight ends to lead 5-1 after five ends. Thienes replied with two in the sixth but Lawton answered back with three in the eighth end to put the game out of reach.

Friday, Thienes lost her morning match 7-4 to Biggar’s Brett Barber. Barber scored three in the third end to lead 4-1 and Thienes was never able to draw even despite singles in the fourth and fifth ends to make it a one-point game. Barber scored singles in the next three ends to put the game out of reach.

The Shaunavon rink’s run came to an end Friday evening in a 7-2 loss to Saskatoon’s Jessica Hanson. The game was tied 1-1 after four ends before Hanson stole a pair of points in the fifth and sixth ends to open a 5-1 lead.

Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton defeated Regina’s Michelle Englot 4-2 in Sunday’s final to repeat as provincial champion. Lawton, third Sherry Anderson, second Sherri Singler, and lead Marliese Kasner will represent Saskatchew­an at the 2015 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw on February 14-22.
