Shau­navon rink misses play­offs at provin­cials

It was a tough week at the 2015 Viterra Scot­ties Tour­na­ment of Hearts Women’s Provin­cial Cham­pi­onship for Wendy Thienes as her Shau­navon rink lost all five games in Assini­boia.

Thienes was joined by third Shelly Rhodes, sec­ond Della Mof­fat, and lead San­dra McKel­lar. They dropped their open­ing match at the Viterra Scot­ties Tour­na­ment of Hearts Wed­nes­day. The Shau­navon rink lost 11-4 to Bal­go­nie’s Mandy Selzer in eight ends after fall­ing be­hind 6-0 after two ends.

The Shau­navon rink dropped their next game 12-4 to Saska­toon’s Tr­ish Paulsen in nine ends Thurs­day. Paulsen jumped ahead 8-3 with three points in the sev­enth end and then scored four in the ninth end to fin­ish things.

Thienes dropped her evening game 8-4 to Saska­toon’s Ste­fanie Law­ton. Thienes scored a sin­gle in the open­ing end with the ham­mer but Law­ton scored points in four straight ends to lead 5-1 after five ends. Thienes replied with two in the sixth but Law­ton an­swered back with three in the eighth end to put the game out of reach.

Fri­day, Thienes lost her morn­ing match 7-4 to Big­gar’s Brett Bar­ber. Bar­ber scored three in the third end to lead 4-1 and Thienes was never able to draw even de­spite sin­gles in the fourth and fifth ends to make it a one-point game. Bar­ber scored sin­gles in the next three ends to put the game out of reach.

The Shau­navon rink’s run came to an end Fri­day evening in a 7-2 loss to Saska­toon’s Jessica Han­son. The game was tied 1-1 after four ends be­fore Han­son stole a pair of points in the fifth and sixth ends to open a 5-1 lead.

Saska­toon’s Ste­fanie Law­ton de­feated Regina’s Michelle En­glot 4-2 in Sun­day’s fi­nal to re­peat as provin­cial cham­pion. Law­ton, third Sherry An­der­son, sec­ond Sherri Sin­gler, and lead Mar­liese Kas­ner will rep­re­sent Saskatchew­an at the 2015 Scot­ties Tour­na­ment of Hearts in Moose Jaw on Fe­bru­ary 14-22.
