Police seeking suspect in eight armed robberies across Western Canada
Police across Western Canada are calling on the public to assist with identifying the individual responsible for eight armed robberies over a seven week period at financial institutions across British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
During a series of press conferences, police in Western Canada issued a call for information in finding the individual responsible for a series of bank robberies between December 1 and January 21.
The lone Saskatchewan robbery occurred in Swift Current around 7:15 p.m. on January 8 when the suspect stole an undisclosed amount of money from the Royal Bank Branch in the 200 block of 1st Ave. N.W.
Other armed robberies from financial institutions have occurred on: Dec. 1 - Princeton, B.C.; Dec. 9 - Vernon, B.C.; Dec. 19 - High River, AB; Dec. 23 - Merritt, B.C.; Jan. 8 - Swift Current; Jan. 13 - Lethbridge; Jan. 16 - Claresholm, AB; and Jan. 21 - Aldergrove, B.C.
"We do want to reiterate to the public that this person is considered armed and dangerous, specifically because a firearm or a weapon was involved in each of the incidents," noted Saskatchewan RCMP Spokesperson Mandy Maier.
The investigation was originally headed by the RCMP Serious Crimes Branch South in Calgary, where security footage from each financial institution has collaborated that it is the same individual committing these offences.
"It’s not something that is an often occurrence. As soon as the incidents were connected by investigators, that’s why we came forward as soon as possible," Maier said. "Current investigation has revealed this is possibly the same suspect, and that’s why we’re appealing to the public because its occurred across so many provinces.
“It’s important that we identify this suspect and bring him safely into custody."
The suspect is described as: - Caucasian male; - Between 25 to 35 years old; - Slim build; - 5’6” to 6’ tall; - Unshaven, brown goatee/beard;
- Seen wearing a black toque and dark sunglasses;
- Dressed in dark clothing, and wearing gloves.
Police are hoping to receive information that will help identify the suspect.
"Just based on the wide range of communities where these incidents have happened, we can’t speculate on when or if this will happen again. That’s why if you do have information on the suspect to please call the tip line. If you wish to remain anonymous in Saskatchewan you can call Crime Stoppers with information."
Anyone with information regarding any of these robberies, or if you have information on the identity of the suspect, call the tip line at 1-844-887-6287.
