Junior Colts win Estevan gold

-

The Swift Current Comp. Junior Colts basketball team brought home gold from the Energy City Junior Boys Basketball Tournament in Estevan with three straight wins.

The Colts opened the tournament with a 54-37 win over the host Estevan Elecs after holding the Elecs to only three points in the opening quarter.

The Colts had lost to Estevan at their home tournament but played tremendous defence, contested shots, rebounded very well, and prevented Estevan's top three-point shooters from getting clean looks. Reagan Martin led the Colts with 15 points, while Wyatt Wiebe added eight points and Michael Sisa had seven.

The Junior Colts overcame an older and more experienced Oxbow Black Knights team for a 59-55 overtime win in their second game. Wiebe knocked down five three-pointers during a 17-point outing, while Kyle Tisdale and Sim Singh both had eight points.

Oxbow was led by towering post Paedrig Barnes, who scored 26 points as the Colts struggled to keep him off the offensive glass.

“We had to adjust our defence at half to stop their high post entry which led to them getting some easy baskets in the first half. We were able to force a couple of turnovers early in the overtime that led to fast break points,” explained coach Adam Jackson.

The Colts concluded the tournament with a 50-29 win over the Stoughton Bulldogs. Wiebe, Tisdale, and Kelton Dyck all scored 12 points in the win.

Jackson noted that Stoughton was a senior team that only had six players. “We tried to fast break at every opportunity and they ran out of gas in the second half. Our defence did a great job pestering passes on the perimetre and not allowing them to dribble into the key,” he said.

“Some real team improvements in the areas of defensive rebounding, defensive positioning and passing," Jackson said of the gold medal performance. "Our free throw shooting and passing are areas we need to get better at in order to keep improving.”
