Library Board adds Book Nooks around Swift Current

- SUBMITTED

The Swift Current Branch Library Board has launched a pilot project which aims to spread the joy of reading throughout Swift Current.

They recently unveiled Community Book Nooks at five locations within Swift Current: The Canadian Mental Health Association, The Salvation Army, Southwest Crisis Services, Fresh Start, and Dorie’s House. Each Book Nook features bookshelves of free books which never need to be returned to the library.

The goal of the Swift Current Branch Library Board’s Community Book Nooks is to make books and other reading material readily accessible for people who may have barriers to using the library or buying books. Having easy access to reading material is important for literacy, and it brings joy to people lives.

People may take books for free from the Community Book Nooks; they can keep them, or pass them on to another reader.

The Library Board stocks its Community Book Nooks with a wide variety of books, including children’s books, young adult books, and adult reading material. The Books Nooks are stocked with books that have been donated or that are no longer needed in the library collection. The Community Books Nooks are restocked on a regular basis by Library Board volunteers.

The Swift Current Library Board’s Community Book Nooks have been well used in the short few months since they began, and so far they have given away over 200 books.

“This project is one more way that the Swift Current Branch Library can strengthen and sustain lifelong learning in our communities,” board member Sharon Peters stated.
