57’s open sea­son with three losses

The Swift Cur­rent 57’s had a rough open­ing week in the Western Ma­jor Base­ball League with three straight losses.

Thurs­day, the 57’s made a few too many mis­takes in a 4-3 loss to the vis­it­ing Wey­burn Beavers to open the 2018 WMBL reg­u­lar sea­son.

The 57’s were held to seven hits and two walks in the game. Catcher Dau­son Tate led the way with two hits and a run scored. Lead­off man An­thony Ste­wart and right-fielder Alex Orenczuk scored, while Jerad Dokey, Bryan Benz, and Tyler Wo­j­ciechowski all added runs bat­ted in.

Fri­day, the 57’s had one poor in­ning to fall to 0-2 with a 7-1 loss in Moose Jaw. They al­lowed six runs in an in­ning be­fore the game was called due to rain in the sev­enth in­ning. The Miller Ex­press took a stran­gle­hold of the game with a six-run third in­ning when they com­bined three hits with three walks and two hit bat­ters. The 57’s scored in the sec­ond in­ning when Bo Mcclin­tock and Oren­sczuk hit back to back dou­bles.

Sun­day, the 57’s scored the game’s open­ing five runs, but al­lowed a string of 15 con­sec­u­tive runs in an 18-8 loss to the host Regina Red Sox.

The 57’s scored in each of the first three in­nings, capped by a two-run home run from Benz.

Ste­wart dou­bled dur­ing a three-hit out­ing and also scored and knocked home a run. Wo­j­ciechowski sin­gled twice, scored twice, and knocked one run home.

Orenczuk sin­gled and walked, scored, and fin­ished with two RBI. Des­ig­nated hit­ter Jared Bins­field dou­bled, sin­gled, walked, and scored a run.

The 57’s used five pitch­ers, in­clud­ing two score­less in­nings from re­liever Aaron Pugh. He al­lowed one hit and one walk while strik­ing out three.

The 57’s have five games over seven days this week. They open the week with road games in York­ton on Thurs­day and Fri­day. The 57’s will be back at home on Sun­day to host the Regina Red Sox at 2:05 p.m.

The 57’s will get their first ever visit from the Fort Mcmur­ray Gi­ants on Mon­day and then host the Oko­toks Dawgs on Tues­day.
