Organic Field Day Aug. 1
On Wednesday, August 1, the Swift Current Research and Development Centre will be hosing an Organic and Low-input Agricultural Systems Field Day and Tradeshow.
The Tradeshow will be held day long at Walker Place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Field Day begins at 9 a.m. with introductions and travelling to South Farm for the Field Trials Tour. The group returns to Walker Place for 11:45 a.m. lunch, followed by networking and an afternoon of presentations.
The Field Trials tour includes: • Intercropping and following cash crops;
• Diversified cropping strategies to improve sustainability of organic production: Cover crop blends and following cash crops;
• Allelopathy;
• Tillage timing and intensity; • Polycrop mixes for grazing; • Phoma bioherbicide;
• New organic trials and studies starting in 2019.
Afternoon presentations will cover the following topics:
• Mixed grain intercrops;
• Role of field boundary habitats in agro-ecosystems;
• Market signals and converting to organic farming;
• Agronomy and ecology for organic production;
• Update on Saskorganics activities • Organic producer panel about onfarm research projects and participatory breeding;
• Display on organic agriculture in the Prairies.
