Shakespeare At Speedy Creek will debut in 2019

He said calling the festival Shakespeare At Speedy Creek is a fun title and it challenges people’s impression of Shakespeare.

“The reason that that title is special…is it’s got a lovely sense of colloquialism and a little bit of irreverence. And what we’re always going to try and get across to the community, and beyond, is a sense of fun and engagement with these great plays.”

He added that their production will be education, as the actors will endeavour to help people understand the language of the play through their acting.

“I’m excited to share this with young people, actors, the general public. So that when they experience the play, they’ll actually go, ‘You know what? I understood that. It seems like they’re actually speaking every-day speech, even though its elevated and has a different vocabulary.’”

“We’ll be doing our utmost to have you really enjoy the overall experience, and hopefully leave going ‘hey, I got all of that’ and kind of debunk some of those cultural barriers that we sometimes put up.”

The Festival will also include a partnership with the Art Gallery of Swift Current, who will provide artwork along with hands on art opportunities.

“In the first year, it’ll be the beginning,” he said. “But after a few years we’ll have many things that will excite people in addition to the plays.”

Mccall also announced he has been invited to be the Producer/creative Director of both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games, along with Associate Producer Stefan Rumpel.

“We’re going to open the (Shakespeare) Festival concurrent with the Games, so it’ll be a grand time in the City next summer.”
