Broncos open WHL preseason on the road

The Swift Current Broncos had a busy a busy week with training camp, followed by their annual intra-squad game and two Western Hockey League preseason contests.

Team Blue scored the first three goals in a 3-1 win in the Swift Current Broncos annual Blue & White Game on Thursday afternoon.

Matthew Culling scored in the first period, Logan Foster tallied in the middle stanza, and Mitchell Vaillant counted in the third period for a 3-0 lead.

Brayden Shaw replied in the third period for Team White.

Jordan Fairlie and Ashton Billesberg­er each played scoreless periods in goal, while veteran Joel Hofer allowed the only goal for Team Blue.

Isaac Poulter, Parker Sawka, and Jordan Frey each allowed one goal for Team White.

Friday, the Broncos opened the 2018 WHL preseason with a 4-1 loss to the host Regina Pats.

Veteran Mackenzie Wight scored with 35 seconds left in the second period to get the Broncos on the board.

Fairlie made 32 saves in a losing cause for the Broncos. Carter Woodside and Matthew Pesenti each made 11 saves while sharing the win.

Saturday, the Broncos dropped their second straight game with a 3-1 loss to the Saskatoon Blades in Regina.

The Broncos were outshot 37-21, but got 34 saves from veteran Joel Hofer to stay in the contest.

Veteran Ethan Regnier scored the only goal while shorthande­d in the second period in a losing cause.

The Broncos will play their final two exhibition games against the Lethbridge Hurricanes next weekend. They visit the Hurricanes on September 14 and host them the following evening at 7 p.m. at the Innovation Credit Union iplex.
