With three concerts and a pair of comedy events, January is shaping up to be a busy entertainment month in Swift Current.

The first musical event of the year is on Saturday, January 12 when The Royal Foundry take to the Blenders concert stage at the Lyric Theatre.

The Edmonton based alt-pop duo of Jared and Bethany Salte will bring their infectious sound to Swift Current after a successful 2018.

Their 13-song release Lost In Your Head earned a quartet of 2018 Edmonton Music Award nominations, with the single All We Have winning for Pop Recording of the Year.

They will be releasing a new album this year, but have already released a new single Don’t Know.

The duo is on the upswing after releasing a 10 track folk rock album Wherever We Go in 2014, and they have built momentum with their new sound which has been showcased on a series of singles and EPS over the past few years. They reached the Top 12 of the Peak Performance Project Alberta in 2015, and continue to develop a following for their music.

Next up on the Blenders concert stage is The Jerry Cans on Friday, January 18.

This six-member band from Iqaluit combines traditional throat singing with upbeat folk and alt-country music. They were nominated for a Juno Award as the Breakthrough Group of the Year 2018 in recognition of their eclectic sound which meshes Inuk throat singing, rock, country and folk. One of their ear grabbing songs is their rendition of Ahead By A Century sung in Inuttitut.

Their Blenders Concert Series performance will be their first performance of 2019, and they will be supported by opener Joshua Qaumariaq. They teamed up to record the single Ilinnut in late 2018.

Advance tickets for both Blenders concerts are available at Pharmasave or online at eventbrite.com.

Also on Friday, January 18, Erin Costelo will be featured in the first Stars for Saskatchewan performance of 2019.

The soulful Costelo will be on the Living Sky Casino Event Centre stage at 7:30 p.m., a night after performing in Shaunavon on January 17 as part of a seven date Saskatchewan tour.

This past October she released the 10 song recording Sweet Marie, which showcases the sweet-voiced award winning performer from Halifax.

CBC produced a documentary on Costelo’s work in making the album Sweet Marie in just 10 days, and that feature Sweet Marie: In Studio With Erin Costelo aired this past weekend.

Costelo had a busy end to 2018 with 25 shows touring in support of her new material, and she has a busy year ahead with 19 additional concerts already lined up in Eastern Canada, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria.

Sweet Marie has put Costelo on an upward trajectory, as she continues to build her career on the solid foundation from her previous releases Down Below The Status Quo from 2016, the 2012 We Can Get Over, and her earliest works Fire & Fuss and The Trouble and The Truth.

Tickets are available at Ticketpro.ca or by calling 1-888-655-9090.

2019 will get off to a humorous start when writer, comedian, podcaster and film director Kevin Smith appears at the Living Sky Casino on January 19.

Smith has written and directed numerous films, including Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Red State , and Tusk; he is the creator of AMC’S Comic Book Men, plus he has authored Silent Bob Speaks, Shootin’ the Sh*t with Kevin Smith, My Boring-ass Life and most recently Tough Sh*t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good.

Yuk Yuk’s On Tour will be bringing two comedians to the Lyric Theatre on Friday, January 25. The upcoming comedy evening will feature William Hannigan and headliner Kevin Mcgrath at a 9 p.m. show. Tickets are available at Pharmasave.
