Chinook School Division Sports Report
My goodness, Mother Nature was not cooperating with the plans for the SWAC basketball junior and senior league recently. Hopefully, the weather will settle down after the February break and the curling/basketball playoffs can continue as planned.
JUNIOR BASKETBALL LEAGUE
In the SWAC junior girls’ basketball league final, the SCCHS gr 9 Ardens won over the Waldeck Warriors (48-37). The game was very close in the first half; Waldeck had a two-point lead after two quarters. Swift Current made some adjustments at half time and pulled away in the second half of the game. Congratulations to both teams on strong seasons. The junior girls third place game was to have the Wymark Wolverines hosting the Shaunavon Silhouettes. That game is postponed until Wednesday, February 27.
Our boys’ basketball league playoff was also affected by the weather. The SCCHS gr 9 Colts were to host the Shaunavon Shadows in the league final. That game has been rescheduled to Monday, Feb. 25. The Maple Creek Rebels and the Gull Lake Lions have decided not to play the third place game.
SENIOR BASKETBALL LEAGUE
The extreme cold weather caused the cancellation of the final scheduled league basketball games. We used the standings at the end of Feb. 10 to determine league playoffs. The league semi-final games are on Tuesday, February 26 and in the senior boy’s playoffs, #1 SC Jr Colts will host #4 Gull Lake Lions and #2 Frontier Raiders host #3 Shaunavon Shadows. The senior girls semifinal match ups have #1 Shaunavon Silhouettes hosting #4 Maple Creek Rebelles and #2 Herbert Laurel’s hosting the #3 SCCHS Jr Ardens.
SENIOR REGIONAL CURLING
Six SWAC teams will represent the Southwest at SHSAA Regional curling in Regina on March 1-2. Val Marie and Maple Creek mixed teams, Maple Creek and Gull Lake girls, and both SCCHS boys’ teams. The top two teams, in each category, will advance to the SHSAA Provincial Championship (March 8-9) from the Regional level.
SECTIONAL JUNIOR CURLING
The top two junior section teams will advance to the SWAC District Championship held in Swift Current on March 1-2. The girls’ competition will have Fox Valley, Maple Creek, and Ponteix battling for the title. Boys’ teams at the SWAC playoffs are Burstall, Cabri, SCCHS and SC Centennial. The open category has teams from Leader, Fox Valley, Eastend, Shaunavon, and Swift Current Centennial. The games start on Friday afternoon and will wrap up on Saturday.
UPCOMING SHSAA PLAYOFFS
On March 1-2, the SCCHS wrestling team will compete at the SHSAA Regional Wrestling tournament in Weyburn. Top finishers there advance to provincials in Regina on March 8-9.
Six senior SWAC curling teams will represent the south west at SHSAA Regional curling in Regina (Val Marie and Maple Creek mixed teams, Maple Creek and Gull Lake girls, and both SCCHS boys’ teams). Our junior section curling A/B champions will compete in the SWAC Junior Curling Championship in Swift Current.
All of our senior 1A – 5A SWAC basketball teams will be off to their conference championships on March 8-9. The final conferences have been set by the SHSAA and are posted on their website. This is the first step on the “Road to Hoopla” (provincial basketball championship). SWAC is exited that the Gull Lake Lions and Maple Creek Rebels will each host an SHSAA Conference Boys Basketball championship.
