Excitement growing for Western Canada Summer Games
April 30 is circled on the calendar as that is the day the countdown to the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games will reach the 100 day mark.
The multi-sport games will converge on Swift Current on August 9 to 18, and the extensive planning to host the event will switch into a different gear over the coming weeks.
On May 1 the ticket sales will launch for the 16 sports which will comprise the 10-day long competition. Admission prices will be discounted by 10 per cent during the early days of ticket sales, and full information on ticket details will soon be available on the Games website 2019wcsg.ca.
Next Wednesday will also be a big day for Games officials, as they will be making a presentation at the Saskatchewan Legislature to further build excitement for the upcoming competition.
Swift Current City Councillor Pat Friesen also noted at this past Monday’s city council meeting that the Chef de Missions for the participating provinces and territories will be meeting in Swift Current on May 7 to 9 in order to review all the final feedback and pre-plans while making sure everything is ready for the athletes.
Additionally, the individuals selected to participate in the Torch Relay will be contacted next month. The time-honoured tradition of a relay which will be hosted in Swift Current on August 3, Lac Pelletier Regional Park on August 4 and the Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park on August 5.
“It’s getting very exciting. I know a lot of people are starting to talk about it. People are booking their holidays around it. So it’s really going to be a good time in the City of Swift Current,” Friesen said.
At the start of this past week the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games medals were unveiled.
