The Sandhills Boxing Club is looking forward to hosting boxers from both sides of the border on May 11 when they host the South Saskatchewan Classic.

The fifth-year boxing club, led by coach Kennith Blohm, currently has 11 competitive boxers and is hoping to have matches for nine of them in their home event.

Bloom was working on having two sparring matches and 21 matches, although that number is subject to change.

“Usually some fall apart, but this year, if they do, we’ll be okay,” he laughed.

This will be the fourth card the Sandhills Boxing Club has hosted in Leader and they are looking forward to hosting the Three Nations Boxing Club from Minot, North Dakota this time around.

“It’s huge. There is no way one person could do it by themselves,” admitted Blohm. “I am so lucky to have a great crew behind me. The clubs have been really great giving me lists. We have a team from the USA coming up with all open competitors, a bunch of national champions and getting matches for them has been difficult but it’s coming along. We’ve got clubs from Calgary and Edmonton and they’ve all been really great to make this happen, to make a great card.”

There is a possibility that Janick Lacroix, formerly of Ponteix, could be fighting in the main event, but his participation is contingent on his performance at Nationals.

The Sandhills Boxing Club is now in its fifth year of operation and features competitors ranging from ages six to 45.

Blohm’s own daughter Willow is six years old and will have her first competitive match at the South Sask Open. 45-year-old Sheldon Siewert is also hoping to make his ring debut in Leader.

“We’ve been working really hard to get ready for this to make our community proud. Everybody has been such a great group this year. It’s such a great group of people to come together to make it a very easy place to work out. It’s very family oriented and I couldn’t have been happier about this whole season,” said Blohm.

The Leader Community Hall doors will open at 6 p.m. and the card will get underway at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and are available at Dirk Family Pharmacy and Scott’s Fine Foods.
