Market Square kicks off a new season on Saturday

Vendors from around the region are gearing up for another summer of showcasing their wares at Swift Current’s Market Square.

The popular summer tradition in Swift Current will be held for 16 consecutiv­e Saturday’s in downtown Swift Current, running from June 15 to September 28.

“We’re trying to I’d say pick it up a notch, that we want to do more interactiv­e things for children and families,” explained Market Square coordinato­r Marlene Johnson.

She unveiled a series of 2019 highlights during a presentati­on at Swift Current City Council on June 3.

One of the new interactiv­e areas will be the Swift Current Museum tent, where children can participat­e in activities during the summer like making rope and making butter, along with other hands on things.

During the Market Square 2019 kickoff Saturday, the Saskpower Windscape Kite Festival will be the featured Business of the Week.

Another highlight on Saturday will be a chili cook off in support of The Centre, running from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Chili will be made by members of the Swift Current Fire Department, Swift Current Municipal RCMP, and the Swift Current and District Ambulance Service. Proceeds from the fundraiser will support The Centre’s Wednesday Meal Program. Community members can also vote for their favourite chili.

There will also be live entertainm­ent and an appearance by Gramma Zoo Exotics.

A busy opening month continues on June 22 when the spotlight will be shone on the Swift Current SPCA. This Saturday there will be a special putt for pets SPCA Day fundraiser and other activities.

The June 29 Market Square boasts a Western Theme during Frontier Days, and the square will again be a busy place following the Frontier Days Parade.

At the July 6 and 27 Market Square, a table will be set up by the Lyric Theatre to share details of The Great Southwest Shakespear­e Festival which will hold 15 performanc­es between July 26 and August 17.

The Western Canada Summer Games will hold a portion of their Torch Run at Market Square on August 3.

On September 7, the eighth annual Cruisin’ Show and Shine will be hosted, and this car show has attracted a growing number of vehicles each year.

The last 2019 Market Square on September 28 will highlight the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
