57’s avoid losing streaks

The Swift Current 57’s won every other game last week as they finished with a 3-2 record against two opponents in the Western Canadian Baseball League.

Wednesday, Jack Large finished a triple short of a cycle, including a three-run home run and a RBI double during a 7-4 win over the visiting Fort Mcmurray Giants. Second baseman Vinny Margiotta also homered during a two-hit, two-rbi outing.

Tyler Murphy earned the win as he held the Giants to two earned runs over five innings. Garrett Alexander earned the save with three scoreless innings to close things out.

Thursday, the 57’s were held to four hits and did not get their first hit until the sixth inning in a 3-1 loss to the Giants. James Moses scored the only run when he took advantage of a couple errors to score in the third inning. The bullpen pitched four scoreless innings in the loss, led by Graeme Cherry who allowed only one hit and no walks over three innings.

Friday, the 57’s hit three home runs in a 7-3 win over the Giants. Catcher Tanner Holen led the way with a three-run home run, while Jack Large and Colby Seltzer also hit solo home runs.

Jared Binsfeld singled twice and scored, while Ian Mcintyre doubled during a two-hit evening and knocked home a run.

Starter Brandon Oneill held the Giants to six hits, one walk, and three runs, only two that were earned. Aaron Pugh earned the win with 2.2 scoreless relief innings. Logan Garza got the final four outs to close things out.

Saturday, the 57’s allowed 21 hits in a 12-0 loss to the Regina Red Sox. Holen led the 57’s with three hits, while Binsfeld doubled twice in a losing cause.

Sunday, the 57’s rebounded in a major way with an 11-6 win over the Red Sox, despite losing starting pitcher Zachary Patterson to injury after recording only one out. Three relievers combined to finish the game, including winning pitcher Aaron Pugh, who allowed only two hits and one earned run over 2.2 innings. Alexander allowed only two hits and one earned run over the final 4.2 innings to close out the game.

Shortstop Breyden Eckout had a breakout game with four hits, including a triple and a double, a stolen base, three runs scored, and three RBI.

Designated hitter Alex Stinnett finished with three hits, one walk, two runs scored and three RBI. Ryan Magdic added three hits, including a pair of doubles, and two RBI. Second baseman Vinny Margiotta also had three hits, two runs scored, and two RBI.

The 57’s finished the weekend with a 10-6 record in third spot in the Eastern Division.

The 57’s are in Alberta tonight to visit the Brooks Bombers. They will host the Regina Red Sox on Friday and then visit Regina on Saturday.

The 57’s also host the Weyburn Beavers on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. and then host Moose Jaw on Tuesday.
