Jackson Sitter will continue an incredible year when he represents his province in Athletics at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current.

The 6’2’’ all-around athlete from Leader jumped 12.63 metres at a meet in Prince Albert to qualify for

Team Saskatchewan in the Triple Jump. Sitter will compete on the opening day of Athletics on Thursday, August 15.

Sitter has never had the experience of a multisport games such as the Saskatchewan Summer or

Winter Games and will be competing against athletes one and two years older than him at the WCSG.

“I am excited just to get the experience from all the university level people there and just to have the chance to go,” he explained.

Sitter had a personal best in Triple Jump of 13.03 metres, which he topped at the Tri-province Meet on July 14 with a 13.15-metre jump.

“I would just like a personal best and then learn from the other guys. Hopefully that will help make myself better.”

2019 had been a memorable year for Sitter even before qualifying for the Games. He captained the

Swift Current Abbey Resources Midget AA Broncos to league and provincials titles as they finished with a 47-1 record. In June, he won gold in the Senior Boys

Quadathlon with a record breaking 2,627 points at

SHSAA Track and Field Provincials in Moose Jaw to close out his high school career.

“It’s probably been the perfect grade 12 year to have. Being able to be on that hockey team and then being able to go to high school track and do what

I did there. Now I am going to the Summer Games too,” he noted.

“Jackson’s work ethic is admirable, and his positive attitude and coachability has been a key to his success,” said Leader Saints track and field coach

Megan Hayes. “His motivation to improve his skills was strengthened by his family’s support, often doing extra training with his brother Reed, and driving to Swift Current for extra practice on the rubber track and large jumping pits. Jackson has attended the Legion

Track Camp in the past, and has attended indoor track meets in the winter. He is extremely dedicated, and he has also shown leadership at practices by helping mentor younger members of the track team in Leader.”

Sitter beat out defending champion

Ryan Mills by 99 points at Provincials.

“I knew going in I had a good chance, but I needed a good day to be able to keep up with the other guys.

He won the 100 Metre Dash in 11.50 seconds and then won Long Jump with a 6.03-metre effort. He had a season best toss of 11.70 metres in the Shot Put and his 800 Metres time of 2:12.72 was a personal best to close out the recordbreaking performance.

“Going into the 800 I knew I had a chance at the record, so I needed a good run and I guess I got that.”

“Jackson’s success in track and field has been awe-inspiring for our staff, students and community,” added Hayes.

“He is a very humble person, often keeping his accomplishments to himself.

Watching the joy on his face as he was handed his gold medal for winning the quad event (and breaking a provincial record) was one of the highlights of my career, I am incredibly proud of him. His success has also energized the school spirit at LCS, and strengthened interest and participation in the track program, with this year’s team being the largest we have had in recent memory.”

He is hoping to take some momentum from Provincials into the Summer

Games.

“Yeah I feel good about myself. Obviously it is a different event that I am doing here to there, but it still feels good.”

Sitter said he will workout in Leader, but that he will also be coming into Swift Current to use the jumping pits at the Swift Current

Comp. “It will be good to practice on that track where I’m going to be competing.”

Sitter plans to go to the University of Saskatchewan in September where he will study Kinesiology and hopes to earn a spot on the Huskies Track and

Field team.
