57’s slowed by rash of injuries
The Swift Current 57’s were slowed last week by the injury bug as they struggled to keep pace in the Western
Canadian Baseball League as they integrated new arrivals, losing four of their six games against a pair of Alberta teams.
Tuesday, the 57’s edged the visiting Edmonton Prospects 3-2 in extra innings when
Alex Stinnett singled, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on an error.
Third baseman Toby Allred scored the first two runs and stole a base.
Starter Zachary Patterson held the Prospects to three hits, two walks, and two unearned runs over six innings.
Graeme Cherry added two scoreless relief innings and
Diego Jordan added a pair of shutout innings while striking out five to get the win.
Wednesday, the 57’s fell 4-2 to the Prospects. Allred led the 57’s with three singles, while Kiel Krumwiede scored both runs.
Thursday, the 57’s scored the first four runs, but Edmonton tied the game with four runs in the fifth inning and then won 5-4 in the 11th inning. Krumwiede, Holen,
Ryan Magdic, and Allred all had two-hit outings.
Friday, the 57’s got five scoreless relief innings in a 5-2 win over the host Lethbridge Bulls to end their twogame slide.
Bradon Oneill got the win as he allowed four hits, one walk, and two runs over four innings. Mitchell Waletzki added three scoreless relief innings before Jordan earned the save with a pair of shutout innings.
The 57’s knocked out 11 hits, led by three hits and one RBI from Magdic. Krumwiede and Eckout each finished with two hits and a run scored, while Jared Binsfeld also singled twice. Holen singled, scored, had a sacrifice fly, and two RBI.
Saturday, the 57’s were held to five hits in a 10-2 loss to the host Bulls. Magdic hit a solo home run during a two-hit outing. Infielder Jack
Lombardi also doubled during his 57’s debut.
Jason Griffin threw 108 pitches as he held the 57’s to four hits, one walk, and two runs while striking out five over eight innings to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Sunday, the 57’s lost again, 7-5 to the host Bulls. Eckout led the 57’s with a triple, a single, one run scored, and four RBI. Krumwiede, Holen,
Magdic, and Lombardi all added two-hit outings as well.
The 57’s finished the weekend with a 21-15 record, third in the Eastern Division. They open a three-game home stand tonight against the Regina
Red Sox. They also host the Yorkton Cardinals on Friday and Saturday.
The 57’s will visit the Moose
Jaw Miller Express on Sunday and the Red Sox on Tuesday.
