Mortensen stars for Canada at Summer Universiad­e

Swift Current’s Dylan Mortensen played a prominent role for Canada men’s volleyball team at the Summer

Universiad­e in Napoli, Italy.

Canada finished 11th overall and the 6’7’’ outside hitter was one of the team’s top offensive players.

Canada opened the round robin on

Saturday with a four-set loss to volleyball powerhouse Brazil (13-25, 25-18, 21-15, 18-25). Mortensen led Canada with 20 points in the loss, including 15 kills, three blocks, and two service aces.

Canada fell to 0-2 with a four-set set loss to France (18-25, 27-25, 17-25, 2025) on Sunday. Mortensen accounted for six points in the loss.

Mortensen and Canada got into the win column on Monday with a fiveset win over the Islamic Republic of

Iran (20-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, 15-10).

Mortensen was tied for second with 20 points in the victory. He led the team with 16 kills against Iran.

Tuesday, Canada lost 20-25, 16-25, and 18-25 to Poland to conclude the round robin.

Canada defeated the Ukraine in straight sets (25-17, 25-13, 25-16) in the consolatio­n quarter-final.

Mortensen finished the match with a team leading 12 kills, three kill blocks, and two service aces.

Canada faced the Republic of Korea in the consolatio­n semi-final on Friday and lost in straight sets (21-25, 2325, and 26-28).

Canada defeated Brazil in five sets (25-16, 23-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-9) on

Saturday to conclude the tournament on a winning note. Mortensen led

Canada with 18 kills and five blocks.

Mortensen led Canada with 70 kills during the tournament and also with 14 blocks for kills. He was also tied for second with six service aces over the seven matches.

Canada finished 11th out of 20 teams at the tournament, which was won by the host Italian team.

Mortensen also suited up for Canada’s National Men’s B Team at the

Pan American Cup in Colima, Mexico last month. He will enter his third season with the University of

Saskatchew­an Huskies in the fall.
