57’s sweep Beavers to open playoffs

The Swift Current 57’s advanced to the second round of the Western Canada Baseball League playoffs last week.

The 57’s swept the Weyburn Beavers in two games to open the playoffs.

Zachary Patterson struck out 12 in game one to lead the 57’s to a 5-2 win over the visiting Beavers. The 57’s scored all five runs in the sixth inning, including a tworun home run from John Sechen.

Tanner Holen doubled during a two-hit outing, scored, and had the only other run batted in. Second baseman Elvin Alamo finished the game with three hits, two stolen bases, and a run scored.

Patterson earned the win as he allowed only three hits before Diego Jordan and Garrett Alexander combined for three scoreless relief innings.

The 57’s added a 9-7 win in Weyburn on Friday when the 57’s hit two home runs and two doubles amongst their 11 hits.

Third baseman Breyden Eckout doubled, singled, scored twice, walked, stole a base, and had three RBI. He also pitched two innings without allowing a hit while striking out three.

Shortstop Kiel Krumwiede homered during a three-hit game, scoring twice, and drove home a pair of runs. Jack Large also homered during a two-hit performanc­e as he drove home a pair of runs.

Tyler Murphy earned the win as he allowed six hits, three walks, and four runs over 4.1 innings, while striking out eight. Jordan added 1.2 scoreless innings, while Alexander got the final out for the save.

Sunday, the 57’s lost the opening game of the second round of the playoffs 5-4 to the host Regina Red Sox.

Krumwiede homered for a second straight game as he finished with two hits and three RBI. Holen had the other RBI on a sacrifice fly.

Aaron Pugh and Graeme Cherry each had scoreless relief innings in a losing cause.

Game two was slated for Monday in Swift Current, but postponed until Tuesday due to heavy rain.
