Colts battle through injuries

-

The Swift Current Comp. Colts soccer team won three of four games last week as they battled through some early season injury woes.

The Colts got a measure of revenge on Wednesday in the Moose Jaw High School Soccer League.

The Colts won a heated contest played on terrible field conditions 4-0 over the defending champion Moose Jaw Central Cyclones. The Colts began to avenge the 2018 championship match loss with a shutout win to improve to 3-0 on the season as Ethan Arnold kept the clean sheet in goal.

Rookie Carter Munroe notched his first career goal to open the scoring, while veteran Matthew Epp added a hat trick during a workmanlike performance. Coach Chris Garner noted that Zackery Penner played a shutdown defensive game.

The injury riddled Colts won twice in three attempts at a weekend tournament in North Battleford.

A busy early season schedule caught up to the Colts as they had only 13 players from their 21-man roster available. They opened the weekend with a 1-0 loss to Warman in a rematch of last year’s provincial semifinal, also a 1-0 loss.

The Colts rebounded with a 7-1 win over North Battleford John Paul II. Dilan Vargas had a hat trick, rookie Zach Kielo added a pair of goals, while Jaedyn Carefoot and Epp added singles. Jared Steinley earned the win in goal as the lone goal came from the penalty spot.

The Colts wrapped the weekend with a 5-0 win over Humboldt led by two-goal outings from Vargas and Joel Reimer. Epp also found the back of the net, while Arnold earned the shutout in goal.

The Colts will be in Moose Jaw on Saturday for a league game against AE Peacock.

The Swift Current Comp. grade nine Colts volleyball team went undefeated to win their home tournament over the weekend.

The Colts faced competition from Irwin School, Fox Valley, Wymark, Waldeck, and Leader. They were unbeaten in the round robin before defeating Fox Valley in straight sets in the semi-final and Irwin in the final in straight sets to win gold. They will head to Fox Valley for a tournament on Sept. 28.
