The Swift Current Comp. Colts football team responded from a season opening loss with a 23-0 win over the visiting Moose Jaw AE Peacock Tornadoes under the lights.

The Colts improved to 4-2 in their annual Thursday Night Lights game and 1-1 on the season as their defense held the Tornadoes off the scoreboard.

“Obviously quite a bit better execution-wise and it came with the start. We didn’t click necessarily right away, but the defense was much better. We finished plays and some tackles early on and gave ourselves a chance to get going,” said coach Derek Murdoch.

The Colts battled some early nerves once again in front of a huge crowd at Colts Field.

“We talked about it halfway through the first quarter. Carter [Moberg] throws one of the best balls in the league and just throw it, he overthrew a couple guys. Rhett [Vavra] drops a ball and he doesn’t normally do that. All of sudden we get that touchdown and we got better. We were resilient and the defense did their job the whole game.”

The Colts led 3-0 after one quarter before a nineyard touchdown catch by lineman Leif Zeeb and a 37yard catch and run major from Carson Letkeman. The Colts added a field goal from Ethan Kurtz for a 20-0 halftime lead.

The only score of the second half came on a field goal from Kurtz as the Colts defense got stop after stop.

The Colts finished with 437 yards of total offense, including 283 along the ground. The difference in the game was the game-breaking ability of Rhett Vavra, who ran for 184 yards on seven carries and added 109 yards on two receptions.

The Colts defense was the other story as they held the Tornadoes to 251 yards of total offense, just one week after allowing 294 yards along the ground alone in a loss to Moose Jaw Central.

“They were challenged,” said Murdoch of his defense. “They knew that they had to be better. We talked about it right after the Central game in the locker room. That was the message all week… ‘If you guys tackle and make plays we will be just fine.’”

The Colts improved to 1-1 in the South Rural 3A 12Man Football League. They will visit the league champion Yorkton Raiders on Saturday.

“They are going to be big and physical and they execute… They’ve got lots of different personnel. They’re the defending champs and we’re always going to have to expect that they’re going to be one of the top teams in the league.”
