Community turns out to support Broncos at Community Interactio­n Meeting

“Tonight is the opening salvo on the renewal of this franchise.”

That was the message from Swift Current Broncos Chairman of the Board of Directors Liam Choo-foo during the franchise’s first ever Community Interactio­n Meeting on Feburary 2.

Wiebe selected as WHL Governors Award winner

Ben Wiebe has been selected by the Western Hockey League’s Board of Governors to become the 12th recipient of the WHL Governors Award.

Cabri wins mixed curling provincial­s on home ice

The Cabri Cougars won five straight games to win the provincial title at the SHSAA Mixed Curling Provincial Championsh­ips in Abbey. Cabri was the host team in Abbey and were represente­d by skip Russell Green, third Tayler Stenerson, second Klarke Braaten, lead Mariah Jacklin, and coaches Ron Brawn and Kendall Wicks.

Vause hauls in eight trophies at awards ceremony

Taylor Vause captured a team leading eight awards, including Most Valuable Player honours, when the Swift Current Broncos began their home finale with their annual awards presentati­on. Vause was the runaway offensive leader for the Broncos this season with 83 points in 72 games, 30 better than his nearest teammate.

Coda Gordon was named the team’s Rookie of the Year after his surprising rookie campaign in which he scored 30 goals and finished plus-two. Reece Scarlett was named the Top Defenceman for the second straight season.

APRIL

Perfect championsh­ip season

The Shauanvon Bantam Badgers skated to an undefeated season enroute to claiming the Saskatchew­an Hockey League Bantam championsh­ip. The Badgers capped a 26-0 season with a two-game sweep of their playoff championsh­ip series over Assiniboia.

Broncos add fire power with five forwards in Bantam Draft

The Swift Current Broncos are hoping they have added some scoring punch after selecting five forwards, including Glenn Gawdin, fifth overall in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft in Calgary.

Vause named WHL Humanitari­an of the Year Taylor Vause was named the 2012 winner of the Doug Wickenheis­er Memorial Trophy as the WHL Humanitari­an of the Year Award. He joins Kyle Moir as the only Broncos to have won the award, with Moir winning both the WHL and CHL Humanitari­an of the Year award in the 2006-07 season.

Legends overcome injuries to repeat at badminton provincial­s

Fox Valley’s Austin Dirk and Spencer Kosolofski were pushed to the limit in Boys Doubles, but responded to win their second consecutiv­e provincial championsh­ip at the 2012 Provincial Badminton Championsh­ips in Melfort.

JULY

Saskatchew­an Hockey Hall of Fame honours inaugural inductees

Bryan Trottier, Gordie Howe, Johnny Bower, Glenn Hall, and the 1989 Memorial Cup Champion Swift Current Broncos were among the inaugural inductees to the Saskatchew­an Hockey Hall of Fame in Swift Current.

AUGUST

Team South West finishes third at 2012 Saskatchew­an Summer Games

At the 2012 Saskatchew­an Summer Games in Meadow Lake, Team South West finished in the third spot in the flag and medal standings with a total of 71 medals in 13 sports over the six-day event.

SEPTEMBER

Broncos sign Lamb to contract extension

The Swift Current Broncos announced the signing of Head Coach and General Manager Mark Lamb to a three-year contract extension. Lamb, the sixth head coach in franchise history, is entering his fourth season at the helm of the Broncos since joining the team in 2009.

NOVEMBER

Ardens grab silver at SHSAA soccer provincial­s The Swift Current Ardens soccer team turned in a surprise silver medal performanc­e at the 3A Girls SHSAA Soccer Provincial­s in Weyburn. The Ardens medal performanc­e matched the program’s top result achieved two other times in the team’s 18-year history, with the team also finishing as provincial runners-up in 2003 and 1998.

Legends back on top of 1A boys volleyball

The Fox Valley Legends are back on top of the 1A Saskatchew­an volleyball scene after winning SHSAA 1A Provincial­s in Medstead. The Legends have won 10 provincial titles over a 12-year span.
