Tyler Steenberge­n followed in the fifth round when he was selected 128th overall by the Arizona Coyotes. Steenberge­n tied for the league lead with 51 goals in 72 games during a breakout campaign. He also tied for ninth with 90 points. He led the league with 19 power play goals and 12 game winning goals.

Local athletes win three Canada Summer Games medals

Swift Current athletes brought home a medal of each colour from the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg this summer.

Logan Fritzke won gold in men’s baseball, Aleah Nickel won silver in women’s wrestling, and Austin Shopa brought home bronze in men’s wrestling.

Maffenbeie­r wins national title Swift Current’s Shawn Maffenbeie­r clinched his first motocross national title in Barrie, Ontario on Sunday.

The MX101 FXR Yamaha Team rider won the MX2 class for the sixth time this season to win the season title. He had entered the final with an 11-point lead and started the day as the fastest qualifier and won the first moto for a 20-point lead.

57’s repeat as WMBL champions The Swift Current 57’s opened the Western Major Baseball League season by honouring all of the league and provincial champions from Swift Current over the past year by introducin­g each team at Mitchell Field prior to their home opener.

Two and a half months later it was the 57’s who celebrated a second straight league title on the field well into the night after a 4-0 win over the Edmonton Prospects in game five of the championsh­ip series.

NOVEMBER

Ardens win silver at Provincial­s The Swift Current Comp. Ardens capped an amazing season with a silver medal at the 3A Girls SHSAA Soccer Provincial Championsh­ips in Estevan.

Earlier, the Ardens won a ninth straight Moose Jaw High School Soccer League championsh­ip on October 19 when they defeated the Weyburn Eagles 3-1 as their league unbeaten streak reached 94 matches.

Shadows win second provincial title in three seasons

It was like déjà vu all over again for the host Shaunavon Shadows Saturday when they defeated the Indian Head Broncs 24-7 to win their second SHSAA2A 9-Man Football provincial title in the past three seasons.

Colts back on top at volleyball provincial­s

The Swift Current Comp. Colts won seven straight matches to win their first provincial volleyball title since 1999 on November 18.

Fox Valley wins volleyball gold, Vanguard claims bronze

The high school volleyball season ended on a high note for the Southwest as two boys’ teams captured medals at SHSAA provincial­s on Nov. 24-25.

The Fox Valley Legends won the gold medal at 2A boys in Rocanville after going through the entire tournament without dropping a set.

The Vanguard Valkyrs won a thriller 18-25, 25-21, 15-11 over Mossbank to win the 1A boys’ provincial tournament in Rouleau.

DECEMBER Swift Current partnering with Medicine Hat to bid for the 2019 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.

Swift Current is joining with Medicine Hat in order to bid for the 2019 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.

Both Swift Current and Medicine Hat would co-host the 2019 edition of the eight team event which pits five internatio­nal teams against three Canadian teams (Team Canada Black, Team Canada Red, and

Team Canada White). the gold medal clinching goal at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championsh­ips in Buffalo.

Steenberge­n tipped home a pass from Conor Timmins with 1:40 remaining in regulation to break a 1-1 tie to help Canada to a 3-1 win over Sweden in the gold medal game.

Schafer gearing up for curling appearance at 2018 Olympic Games

Kelly Schafer never thought she would have another opportunit­y to represent Great Britain at an Olympic Games after moving to Swift Current in 2011.

However, Schafer is now less than a month away from competing at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeong Chang, South Korea. She will be participat­ing at the Games as the alternate player for the Great Britain rink skipped by Eve Muirhead.
