Legionnaires battle for playoff positioning
The Swift Current Home Hardware Legionnaires lost both games to the top two teams in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League as the regular season quickly comes to a close.
Wednesday, the Legionnaires got out to a slow start and never recovered in a 7-2 loss to the host Regina Pat Canadians. Regina outshot the visitors 19-2 in the opening frame to open up a 4-0 lead.
Cash Arntsen replied with a shorthanded goal in the second period and Logan Linklater closed the scoring in the third period. Jaxon Martens assisted on both goals, while Tylin Hilbig picked up a single helper. Jacob Herman took the loss with 30 saves.
Carson Whyte scored twice for the Pat Canadians, while Logan Hammett, Kyren Gronich, Cole Gordon, Matt Millette and Cal Caragata all added singles. Drayden Ramage earned the win with 10 saves.
Friday, the Legionnaires allowed three unanswered goals over the final 3:30 to lose 4-2 to the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors. They had built a 2-1 lead on power play goals from Riley Dekowny and Quinn Strang with assists from Rhett Evjen, Ryan Mccleary, Eric Robbie, and Brandon Von Hagen.
Caelan Fitzpatrick scored twice in a 52-second span to give the Warriors the lead and Atley Calvert scored into an empty net. Kirk Mullen had scored into an empty net to open the scoring.
Jacob Herman took the loss despite making 57 saves. Swift Current native Chase Coward earned the win with 15 saves for the Warriors.
The Legionnaires finished the week with a 20-17-1-3 record in eighth place in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.
The Legionnaires will conclude the regular season on Saturday when they host the Prince Albert Mintos at 5:15 p.m.
