Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards release Future Direction Report
On October 29, 2019 the Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards (SCCWS) met with stakeholders and water users of the Swift Current Creek and Rush Lake Creek watersheds. The SCCWS engaged stakeholders to identify issues of water quality and watershed health in these watersheds that SCCWS should address. The stakeholders also examined the completion of Key Actions in the Swift Current Creek Watershed Protection Plan (the Plan) to determine if these actions were still relevant to the work of the SCCWS as it had been ten years since the release of the Plan.
After thorough discussion about the issues and the relevance of the Plan, stakeholders identified three priority areas for the SCCWS to focus their work on for the next five years. They are:
• Impacts of agriculture on water quality and quantity, and watershed health.
• Impacts of extreme climate events and management to maximize water resources for all users.
• Impact of Invasive species on water quality and watershed health.
The SCCWS then worked with a Technical Committee to produce the Future Direction Report that sets the course of work for the SCCWS for the next five years based on these three priorities. The SCCWS planned to release the report at the SCCWS 2020 Annual General
Meeting scheduled for March 23, 2020. COVID protocols did not allow us to hold this meeting and we have not been able to meet to with shareholders and water users since then.
The report is available to read on our web-site at www. sccws.com/assets/files/sccws-futuredirectionreport.pdf. If you would like a pdf copy emailed to you or a printed copy mailed to you contact Kevin Steinley at kevin.sccws@gmail.com or call 306-770-4607.
