Coward earns first WHL win against WHL leading Oil Kings

Swift Current’s Chase Coward earned his first career win in the Western Hockey League with an epic upset victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday.

The Oil Kings had only lost once in regulation in 20 previous games, while the Red Deer Rebels were riding a 13-game losing streak and 30 points behind in the standings entering the contest.

Coward made 24 saves on 26 shots to lead the Rebels to their third win of the season.

Elsewhere in the WHL on Saturday, Swift Current’s Reed Jacobson had one assist for the Spokane Chiefs in an 8-3 win over Seattle. Swift Current defenseman Mac Gross also had a plustwo rating in the victory.

Jacobson had 11 points in 17 games and Gross had one assist in 12 games as the Chiefs got out to a 6-7-3-1 start to the season. The Chiefs will conclude the season with games against Everett, Portland, and Seattle this weekend.

Dinsmore’s Joe Arntsen finished with two assists and a plus-three rating in a 6-3 win for the Lethbridge Hurricanes over the Medicine Hat Tigers. The 6’3’’ defenseman now has seven points in 22 games this season.

Sunday, an eventful week for Shaunavon’s Lind family came to a memorable conclusion when Kalan Lind posted his first two-goal and three-point outing in the WHL.

Only three days after older brother Kole Lind made his National Hockey League debut with the Vancouver Canucks, Kalan registered three points during the Red Deer Rebels 5-4 overtime win over the host Calgary Hitmen.

Kalan Lind, the sixth overall pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft, now has four goals and two assists in 14 games as an underage skater.

Coward made 29 saves on 33 shots to lead the Rebels to their second straight win. The 6’2’’ netminder had a 3.00 goals against average and a .904 save percentage in three appearance­s this season.

The Rebels improved to 4-15-3-0 after the two-win weekend. They were set to host the Hitmen on Tuesday to conclude the regular season.
