Southwest competitor­s nearly set for CCA Finals

There should be strong array of Southwest competitor­s in action at the CCA Finals in Swift Current this weekend. Though the final standings were still be jostled over at the final rodeo, plenty of cowboys and cowgirls were well within the top-10 standings in their respective events heading into the final qualifying rodeos.

Maple Creek’s Adam Gilchrist was second in the All Around standings with $2,230, trailing only Tyson Salmon (Stonewall, MB) with $3,494.

Four Southwest cowboys were amongst the leaders for the Canadian High Point Award. Val Marie’s Riley Hayes sat second with $4,845, followed by Waldeck’s Tuftin Mcleod in seventh with $4,036. Mankota’s Shawn Williamson was ninth with $3,712, while Waldeck’s Tee Mcleod was 10th with $3,621. Scott Sigfusson (Tugaske) led the way with $7,210 this season.

Bareback should be one of the events to watch for local rodeo fans as Southwest cowboys held the top three spots in the event. Maple Creek’s Brady Bertram led the way with $5,439 accumulate­d at 10 rodeos this season. Kyle’s Kade Cheney sat second with $1,749 and Maple Creek’s Blake Link was third with $1,722.

Tie Down Roping will be another intriguing event with three locals amongst the leaders, including the top two entries heading into the final rodeo. Shawn Williamson was leading all ropers with $3,626, followed by Tuftin Mcleod in third with $3,064. Tyce Mcleod sat fifth with $2,879.

The Saddle Bronc season standings featured two Maple Creek cowboys in the top five. Adam Gilchrist was fourth with $2,158 and Casey Bertram sat fifth with $2,026. Hanna, Alberta’s Mike Gordon led the event with $3,632.

A handful of Southwest cowgirls could be in the Ladies Barrel Racing field at the Finals. Cadillac’s Brooke Lang was second in the standings with $5,556 from 12 rodeos. Waldeck’s Mallory Mayert sat fifth with $3,612, while Mankota’s April Williamson was in eighth spot with $2,593.

Maple Creek’s Kahl Wasilow will look to continue a tremendous season as he led the Junior Steer Riding standings with $1,541 from nine rodeos this season.

Maple Creek’s Kate Beierbach also led the Junior Girls Barrel Racing standings with a total of $1,403 from eight rodeos.

Maple Creek’s James Perrin led the Novice Saddle Bronc standings with $1,134 heading down the stretch of the season.

A couple of Southwest cowgirls sat in the top 10 of the Ladies Breakaway Roping standings. Val Marie’s Twila Hayes was third with $1,383, while Swift Current’s Madison Kovar was seventh with $860. Fayth Panchuk (Vanscoy) led the standings with $1,832.

The Steer Wrestling field could feature a trio of Southwest cowboys. Val Marie’s Riley Hayes was fourth with $2,627 and Gilchrist was eighth with $1,972. Kyle’s Chad Hantelman recently climbed into the top 10 with $1,376 in 10th spot. Austin Whelpton (Swan River, MB) led the event with $3,782.

The Team Roping field should have some local flavour in Swift Current once again. Val Marie’s

Ryan Hayes was sixth amongst Headers with $2,218, while Waldeck’s Scott Mcleod was seventh with $1,867.

Waldeck’s Tee Mcleod was fourth in the Header standings with $3,201. Riley Hayes was sixth with $2,218 and Swift Current’s Chad Feil was eighth with $1,867.

Hazenmore’s Chanse Switzer will likely be the only local to qualify in the Bull Riding field. He sat fourth with $1,495 earned at three rodeos and was coming off a win in Mankota only two weeks before the Finals. Tyson Salmon (Stonewall, MB) led the event with $2,138 from 10 rodeos.

Mason Duijsens, riding out of Morse, sat second in the Permit standings. Cheney was ranked fifth among rookies with $1,749, while Maple Creek’s Hallie Anderson was seventh with $781.

The CCA Finals will be held on September 24-26 in the Magnus Newland Arena in Swift Current.
