Legionnaires win two of three to maintain playoff position
The Swift Current Home Hardware Legionnaires won two of three games against teams above them in the standings last week.
Tuesday, the Legionnaires lost 2-1 to the visiting Regina Pat Canadians in overtime. Hudson Darby scored in the second period with assists from Matt Ripplinger and Carter Cormier.
Zayden Sadlemyer tied it for the Regina and Ben Riche scored in overtime. Liam Ernst took the loss with 32 saves. Kelton Pyne made 21 saves for Regina.
Thursday, the Legionnaires finally solved the Pat Canadians with a 3-2 overtime win on the road.
Carter Herman scored 1:04 into overtime as the Legionnaires defeated Regina for the first time in four attempts this season.
Josh Heistad scored twice for the Legionnaires in regulation. Ernst earned the win with 27 saves. Bryant Linklater had two assists, while Herman, Eric Hoiness, Noah Mitchell, and Rowan Martin-bryk all added singles.
Riche and Koen Senft replied for Regina, while Pyne took the loss with 19 saves.
Sunday, the Legionnaires scored four goals in the second period to
defeat the host Saskatoon Contacts 6-3. Ernst picked up the win with 21 saves.
Ripplinger led the Legionnaires with two goals and one assist, followed by two goals from Darby
and two assists from Phoenix Larose. Hoiness and Cormier also scored. Theo Mcguire, Denyn Smith, and Nick Smolinski all added assists.
Noah Chadwick, Berkley Catton, and Rhett
Ewen replied for the Contacts. Lane Beal took the loss after allowing six goals on 21 shots over 32:32. Chase Wutzke stopped all nine shots he faced in relief.
The Legionnaires remain
eighth in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League with a 1616-0-5 record, five points ahead of the Battlefords Stars for the final playoff spot.
The Legionnaires will host the Estevan Bears on Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 1:45 p.m. The Bears feature Gull Lake’s Ayden Lamarre, Fox Valley’s Daniel Ganert, and Swift Current’s Carter Tuplin and Cutter Knight.
