Broncos avoid three-game losing streak with win over Lethbridge

The Swift Current Broncos avoided a three-game losing streak last week when they concluded their week with a win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Wednesday, the Broncos lost 5-2 to the host Hurricanes. Cole Nagy and Grayson Burzynski scored in the loss. Isaac Poulter made 30 saves on 35 shots.

Jared Picklyk earned the win with 21 saves on 23 shots. Justin Hall and Ty Nash led the Hurricanes with a goal and two assists each. Swift Current minor hockey product Joe Arntsen added a pair of assists from the blueline.

Friday, the Broncos lost their fourth game in the five outings in a 3-1 loss to the visiting Moose Jaw

Warriors.

The Broncos took the lead late in the first period when Josh Filmon fired home his 19th goal of the season from the slot.

Moose Jaw replied early in the middle stanza when Atley Calvert found the top corner on the rush and then Eric Alarie scored on a rebound on the power play for a 2-1 Warriors lead after 40 minutes. Alarie added an insurance marker 4:08 into the third period as the Warriors connected on a two-on-one after a Broncos turnover at the offensive blueline.

Poulter took the loss with 25 saves, while Carl Tetachuk made 26 saves for Moose Jaw.

Saturday, the Broncos turned things around with a 2-1 win over the visiting Hurricanes. Poulter made 25 saves as the Broncos improved to 5-1-1-0 against the Hurricanes this season.

After a scoreless first period, the Broncos opened the scoring when Nagy shovelled home a rebound on a three-onone midway through the second period.

The Broncos doubled the lead only 19 seconds into the third period when Connor Hvidston tapped home a perfect pass from Josh Davies on the rush for his fifth goal of the season.

Justin Hall cut the lead in half with 4:39 remaining in regulation.

Poulter improved to 1414-3-1, while Picklyk fell to 7–6-0-0 with 16 saves.

The Broncos improved to 16-23-4-1 and finished the weekend in eighth spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Broncos will head to Manitoba this weekend to face the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday and the Winnipeg Ice on Saturday. The Broncos will also host the Wheat Kings on Tuesday.

Gabriel made his WHL debut in Lethbridge and picked up an assist in the first period on Cole Nagy’s goal. The Saskatoon product was a fifth round pick in 2020. He had 13 goals and 20 assists in 33 games with the Warman U18 AAA Wildcats this season. 2021 first round pick Josh Fluker made his WHL debut on

Friday. The Bossevain, MB product has 17 points in 30 games with the Southwest U18 AAA Cougars this season. The 5’10’’ defenseman was the seventh overall pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft in December. Fluker picked up an assist on the game-winning goal for his first WHL point on Saturday.
