SWAC curlers continue provincial playoffs

BASKETBALL

Senior league basketball games on February 7 had Maple Creek girls traveling to Herbert. Maple Creek won the game 68-28. Top Maple Creek scorers were Sierra Frey (28 pts) and Savannah Frey (14 pts). The top Herbert scorer was Cassidy Funk (6 pts).

In the scheduled senior boys game, Vanguard hosted Maple Creek. Maple Creek won an exciting game 60-57 over Vanguard in front of an enthusiast­ic home crowd. Top Vanguard scorers were Jake Klassen (19 pts), Jaspar Gieck (16 pts), and Luigii Eui (12 pts). Top Maple Creek scorers were Ayden Buss (22 pts), Logan Bauer (18pts), and Jaydon Sawby (16 pts).

Maple Creek girls and boys sit atop of the senior league standings with perfect 3-0 records. Vanguard boys are in second place. Gull Lake girls and Herbert girls are looking for their first win.

Senior league games on Tuesday, February 14 will have Maple Creek girls and boys hosting Gull Lake.

SENIOR CURLING

The senior girls, boys, and mixed curling teams have started their journey to the SHSAA provincial playoffs. On Monday, February 6, Whitemud hosted their sectional mixed seeding game between Eastend (Bodie Duke, Makayla Bjornson, Beau Barton, Darci Egland, coach Randy Johnson) and Val Marie (Katherine Andree, Kristian Mything, Joanna, Andree, Jaxson Waldner, coach Amy Andree). Eastend won the game and advanced to districts as the #1 seed.

Senior SWAC districts were held on February 10-11 at the Ponteix Curling Club (commission­er Trish Carleton, assistant Laurie Kendall). Congratula­tions to our “A” side district champions: Gull Lake boys, Hazlet mixed and Swift Current girls.

SWAC will be sending a full slate of teams to the SHSAA Regional Championsh­ip in Moose Jaw on March 3-4.

Girls: 1st - SCCHS (Abby Kroeker, Katie

2nd - Fox Valley (Brooklyn Schell, Kierra Herter, Lexi Schneider, Grace Bosch, Gracie Ross (missing), coach Kalin Deis).

Boys: 1st Gull Lake (coach Amy Dysart, Tyler Lamarre, Zach Dysart, Lucas Mcmillan, Trusten Kirwan, Cohen Haithwaite).

2nd - SCCHS (Ethan Robinson, Riley Starkey, Troy Oakman, Sean Friesen, Sean Friesen, Shane Cornelson, coach Ron Bailey).

Mixed: 1st - Hazlet (Andra Todd, Ian Baumann, Tessa Todd, Braden Baumann, Nike Hoepfner, coach Tarryl Todd).

2nd - Maple Creek (Louise Parsonage, Jayden Sawby, Kellee Parsonage, Morgan Udal, coach Holly Jamieson).

JUNIOR CURLING

Junior sectional curling took place on Saturday, February 11. Top two teams in each sectional advanced to Districts (in some cases, three teams will advance). Thanks to our junior sectional hosts/ commission­ers. Hosting Cypress Hills sectional playoffs were: Fox Valley (Commission­er Dondalee Deis), Gull Lake (Jackie Andrews), and Frontier (Misti Gordon).

The Junior SWAC district curling championsh­ip will take place on March 3-4 in Swift Current. There will be six teams in each of the girls/boys/open classifica­tions.

WHITEMUD

GIRLS: 1st - Consul 1 (Sierra Mackie, Jane Beierbach, Averie Hofer, Kate Beirbach, coach Shauna Jones/shay Pridmore).

2nd - Eastend (Kadence Koolen, Lexy Armstrong, Riley Black, Pheonix Den Hollander).
