VANDEN ELSEN
Vanden Elsen, Maria (Mies) age 88 years of Swift Current, Saskatchewan, passed away at The Meadows in Swift Current on January 24, 2023. The Blessing Service / Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ The Redeemer Catholic Church with Father Thomas Mutavanattu officiating. The interment service will be held at Mount Pleasant Burial Park. The pianist, and longtime friend, is Marlene Dolter and she was accompanied by Sherwin Veitenheimer. Mies is survived by: her caring and loving husband, Victor Onraet of Swift Current; John (Susan) Vanden Elsen, Kristine (Ryan) Corsi (Kamryn, Bree), Robert (Sarah) Vanden Elsen (Mylah, Tye, Jace, Stella); Kathy (Brent) Running, Jaclyn (Ryan) Eastick, Kelly Running (Meagan Szatkowski); Frank Vanden Elsen, Shae (Joe) Adams, Rhet Vanden Elsen; Vicki Onraet (Al Spetz), Sara Reid (Brent) (Bella, Chloe), Shane Reid (Jenaye) (Mason, Colby, Jaxon), Keagan Spetz; Penny (Ken) Baumback; Shane (Carmen) Onraet,
Shelby Onraet (Brent), Derek Onraet (Naomi), Chris (Preeth) Lein (Sunni, Cody); Nicole (Ron) Spring, Graysen Spring (Cloe), Tanaya Spring (Nathan). Maria was predeceased by her husband Martin Vanden Elsen (1996); their two sons: Frankie (1957) and Bobbie (1966); her parents Peter and Katarina Michels; two brothers: Jack and Bob; and one sister Bep. Maria Gerada (Michels) Vanden Elsen was born in Gemert, Netherlands (Holland) on September 23, 1934. She completed school and took a trade to further her education as a seamstress. Mies worked at a factory for years. In 1954, mom met Martinus Vanden Elsen on a bus, he was immigrating to Canada by ship. They wrote back and forth and Martin asked Mies to marry him. She immigrated to Canada and married her first love on October 23, 1954 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. They moved to Swift Current where she was employed at Veterans Dry Cleaners for two years, Singer Sewing Center for three years, Southside Nursing Home, for two years, Rittinger’s Mens Wear for 32 years. She also helped manage the Trail Campground. She was a member of the Oilwives Club. Among her hobbies were: sewing, flower gardening, needle point, camping, fishing, travelling, enjoying the out doors, and endless card playing with family and friends. Mom was fortunate to have two loves in her life, the second being Vic Onraet. They were together over 21 years and their amalgamated family grew. Mies’s family was the most important part of her life, especially her grandchildren, she was known as “Oma” to them and loved being with each and everyone of them. Memorial donations to the Dr. Noble Irwin Foundation in Swift Current would be appreciated and acknowledged by the family.
