SWAC hosts district golf championship

- VAL GORDON

The Eastend Streambank Golf Course hosted the district golf championship on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Thanks to commissioner Heidi Topham and course official Margaret Topham for making the day run so smoothly. The clubhouse (Jaime Morvik/ Nicole Girard) did a wonderful job providing food for the golfers … great feat considering the town was without power for the day

There were 51 golfers registered (gr 9-12) for the competition (record breaking participation). The top four girls and top four boys could advance to SHSAA provincials at Harbour Golf Course (Elbow) on September 22-23.

The SWAC boys champion was Makstr Mcintyre (SCCHS), who shot a 69 over 18 holes. Also advancing to SHSAA provincials were SCCHS’S Adyen Ross (70), and Cameron Schwab (Maple Creek) / Wyatt Mokelki (Eastend) - both with a score of 72.

The SWAC girls champion was Niya Friesen from SCCHS. She shot an 80 through 18 holes. Also advancing to provincials was Lyla Thiessen (SCCHS), who recorded a score of 98. Jaelyn Wills (Eastend) also qualified for provincials, but she isn’t able to attend.

In 12-man football league action, the SCCHS Colts had their first home game on Saturday against Weyburn. It was a tough outing for the hometown team and they registered a 60-7 loss. They hope to rebound when they host Yorkton on Saturday, Sept. 23.

First games in the 9-man league took place on Friday. Shaunavon hosted Gull Lake for their night game “under the lights.” The hometown Shaunavon team won convincingly (59-0) over the Lions.

Also on Friday, September 15, Maple Creek hosted Notre Dame for the first time this season. Maple Creek dropped this home opener 44-14.

Next action for the 9-man teams has Gull Lake hosting Moose Jaw Vanier and Maple Creek hosting Shaunavon on Friday, September 29.

SWAC senior volleyball league matches will start this week. We had eight girls teams and seven boys teams registered. This is the highest number of teams we’ve had in the league in a few years. The challenge in making the draws is the large geographical distance between our entered teams.

Girls will play on Tuesdays and the boys will play on Wednesdays. When there are three teams at a site, they will play a round robin. When there are two teams at a site, they play double matches against each other.

Senior Girls league on Tuesday, September 19: Maple Creek will host Consul, Cabri will host Hazlet, Ponteix will host Frontier and Shaunavon will host Vanguard.

Senior Boys league on Wednesday, September 20: Swift Current Colts 9/10 will host Herbert and Consul, Shaunavon will host Hazlet, and Cabri will host Frontier.
