Broncos swept by Hurricanes in WHL opening weekend
The Swift Current Broncos lost both games to the Lethbridge Hurricanes over the weekend to open the 2023-24 Western Hockey League regular season.
Friday, the Broncos allowed three unanswered goals in a 3-1 loss to the host Hurricanes.
Maddix Mccagherty scored for the Broncos in the first period. Joey Rocha made 31 saves in a losing cause.
Logan Mccutcheon, Logan Wormald, and Landon Ward all scored for the Hurricanes in the third period. Harrison Meneghin made 40 saves for the home team.
Saturday, the Broncos lost the rematch 5-2 in their home opener in front of 2,449 fans at the Innovationplex.
Wormald opened the scoring 24 seconds into the second period as the Hurricanes took advantage of a Broncos turnover
in the defensive end. They doubled the lead minutes later with when Tyson Zimmer snapped home a shot from the right hash mark.
Van Eger cut into the lead midway through the period when he
fired a top-corner shot home during four-onfour action, his first career goal in his 41st WHL game. Lethbridge doubled the lead again only 59 seconds later when Trae Wilke onetimed home a shot during
the same offsetting penalties.
Connor Gabriel scored for the Broncos midway through the third period with a top-corner shot from the slot on the rush to make it a one-goal game once again. The
Hurricanes put the game away with a two-on-one goal from Brayden Edwards with 4:46 remaining. Edwards added a shorthanded goal into an empty net to close the scoring.
Rocha (0-2-0-0) took the loss with 25 saves. Meneghin (2-0-0-0) made 24 saves for the Hurricanes.
The Broncos will host the Calgary Hitmen on Friday and then visit the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday.
