Broncos earn first road win before wild overtime loss

The Swift Current Broncos earned their first road win of the season on Wednesday with a 6-2 victory over the host Brandon Wheat Kings.

Four days after losing 6-3 in Brandon, the Broncos turned the table with five unanswered goals after trailing 2-1 in the first period.

Brady Birnie led the Broncos with two goals as he tied the game each time after Brandon goals from Roger Mcqueen and Brett Hyland.

Mathew Ward notched the game winner late in the second period, his third goal of the season. Rylan Gould, Connor Hvidston, and Grayson Burzynski all scored in the third period to seal the win.

Joey Rocha made 24 saves in the win. Ethan Eskit took the loss with 39 saves on 45 shots.

Friday, the Broncos allowed four unanswered goals in an 8-7 overtime loss to the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers.

The Tigers struck for four power play goals, including the overtime winner from Gavin Mckenna to complete his hat trick.

The Broncos scored three goals on five shots over the opening 7:41. Rookie Jace Mcfaul opened the scoring with his first WHL goal 2:05 into regulation and Gould followed with a power play, deflection goal. Birnie added to the lead with his third goal of the season.

The Tigers pulled within two goals on a Mckenna marker from a two-on-one rush.

Josh Filmon capped the opening period with a shorthande­d goal to restore the three-goal lead, his first goal of the season.

The Tigers tied the game with three straight goals in the second period, the first two from Andrew Basha five minutes apart, including a shorthande­d goal. Tyler Mackenzie quickly tied the game with his third of the season.

The Broncos replied with a power play goal from Hvidston and then Gould added his second goal of the night 30 seconds later to double the lead at 6-4.

Hvidston restored the three-goal lead 4:08 into the third period when he tapped home a two-onone rebound for his fifth goal in four games this season. Josh Van Mulligen, Shane Smith, and Mckenna answered for

Medicine Hat to force overtime.

Rocha took the overtime loss with 39 saves.

Evan May allowed six goals on 18 shots over 44:06 of action in the Tigers net. Zach Zahara played the final 17:20 and made one save on two shots.

The Broncos improved to 2-3-1-0 in the loss.

The Broncos are currently on their B.C. Division road trip that began on Wednesday in Prince George. The Broncos will visit the Vancouver Giants on Friday and the Victoria Royals on Saturday. They will also visit the Kamloops Blazers on Tuesday and the Kelowna Rockets on Wednesday.
