Colts and Ardens win 5A provincial volleyball silver

- VAL GORDON SWAC ATHLETIC COORDINATOR

What an exciting weekend of volleyball for our SWAC teams. We had three teams taking part in SHSAA provincials and four boys teams at regional competitions.

The SCCHS girls and boys teams were at the 5A championships in Prince Albert, with a large contingent of fans making the trek north. Both the Colts and Ardens were ranked third in the province at their championships.

The Ardens were consistently strong in pool play with wins over Regina Campbell (2516, 25-23), Saskatoon Tommy Douglas (25-21, 25-14), Saskatoon St. Joseph (25-14, 25-21) and only one loss to Prince Albert St. Mary (19-25, 13-25).

In the playoff round crossover, they beat

Weyburn (25-15, 27-25) and then took out Regina Campbell in the semi-final (25-15, 25-15). The gold medal final was a rematch, from earlier in pool play, against the hometown team Prince Albert St. Mary. The Prince Albert team was too strong for the Ardens

in this match. The Swift Current squad lost (2025, 15-25) and brought home silver medals. Congratulations on a great season!

The SCCHS Colts had a loss to Saskatoon Holy Cross (25-27, 25-16, 1215) to open their pool play. The team regrouped

and answered with wins over Saskatoon Aden Bowman (26-24, 25-13), Prince Albert Carlton (32-30, 25-21) and Regina Leboldus (25-16, 25-20). That left the Colts in a three-way tie for first in their pool with 3-1 records. When the tie break was applied, the Swift Current team was first in their pool.

It took three sets to get past a fired up Warman team (25-15, 21-25, 15-9). In the semi-final, the Colts toughed out a 25-23, 25-22 win over Regina Winston Knoll.

The final would be played against Prince Albert St Mary. It was a hotly contested match, with the Colts being denied a gold medal threepeat, losing in three sets (19-25, 25-22,14-16). Silver medals were awarded to the SCCHS Colts. Congratulations

to the Colts on their strong season!

In the 3A girls provincials at Indian Head, Maple Creek girls opened pool play with losses to Kipling (17-25, 19-25), Waldheim (21-25, 19-25), and Lanigan (1325, 21-25). They turned things around on Saturday and got a win over Osler VCA (25-17, 25-20). That win put them into the playoff quarter final versus Oxbow. That’s where the Rebels season ended with a loss to the eventual silver medalists (14-25, 17-25).

In boy’s SHSAA volleyball regional play, all of our SWAC teams advanced out of their regional and are on to Provincials. Each regional was six teams split into two pools of three. The top two in each pool advanced to the playoff rounds.

1A Fox Valley had wins over Leroy (2-0) and Frontier (2-0) in pool play. They won the semi-final over Lafleche (2-0) and then became regional champions beating Frontier in the final (2-0).

1A Frontier got a win over Leroy (2-0) and lost to Fox Valley (0-2) in pool play. They then beat Legacy Christian Academy in the crossover semi-final (2-1). That put them up against longtime SWAC rival, Fox Valley, in the final. The Raiders lost to Fox Valley (2-0), but their second place finish earned a trip to Provincials in Annaheim.

2A Ponteix hosted a regional championship. In pool play, they beat Regina Harvest City (2-0) and LCBI (2-0). In the semi-final, they played Kincaid, who beat the Predators in the conference final last weekend. The result was different this time, with Ponteix winning (2-1).

The Ponteix team took on Moose Jaw Cornerstone in the regional final, and lost (0-2). Even though they get an automatic berth being Provincial host, their second place finish also earned them a provincial spot.

3A Shaunavon was in Assiniboia. The Shadows opened pool play with a win over Outlook (2-0). Their second match was a loss to Unity (0-2). They advanced to the playoff round and lost to conference rival, Assiniboia, in the crossover game, but they qualified for Provincials in Unity as the third seed out of their regional.

PROVINCIAL VOLLEYBALL HOST

The SHSAA awarded Ponteix the 2A boys provincial championship for 2023. They will use Ponteix gym and Pambrum gym for the event on November 24 and 25.

Come out and watch the top teams in the province battle for SHSAA provincial gold.
